Vertigo from Arikayce?

Posted by Mary @mjb24, Feb 3 4:22pm

I have been on Arikayce for 18 months with no real side effects. Last Thursday I had an awful episode of vertigo. My dr gave me something to take for the dizziness and vomiting and thankfully it helped. I was told to stop the Arikayce until I saw my ENT doctor which I did today. They did not find anything but I have to go back next Wednesday for a vestibular function test. He thought I should be safe to re-start the Arikayce. His thoughts were that if it hadn't affected me over 18 months it probably isn't the cause. Has anyone else come down with vertigo after taking Arikayce? If so, how long were you on the Arikayce when the vertigo started?

@swang18 The medication she gave me for the dizziness was Meclizine 12.5 mg tablets. Best of luck!

@bailey1 Yes, the testing I had done was at the ENT and no hearing loss, no sign of toxicity from Arikayce. He said it was displaced crystals in the inner ear. I hope the Arikayce is effective for you, many on this group have had good results after starting it.

I was on it for almost 3 years and just recently found out that I’ve become antibiotic resistant (for Azithromycin also) and was taken off immediately. What a mess. Why wasn’t I checked earlier??

@cahcb4769 Agreed! Being on it that long, you would think they would check for susceptibility . My ID doc does check susceptibility of all meds periodically. I am thankful for that.

@cahcb4769 That would be a really good question to ask your treating doc, whether pulmonology or infectious disease, especially if you continued to test positive for NTM/MAC. How frequently was your sputum tested during the time your were on antibiotics?
