Vaginal burning: What could it be?

Posted by mmoss @mmoss, Mar 30, 2021

I am a 67 year old who in the last two months have a severe burning sensation in my vaginal area. I have been to every specialist and no one knows why. I have had a CT, Ultra sound, and been examined numerous times. There are no findings to what is causing this pain. I have no underlying medical conditions. Prior to this I was extremely healthy. Now I am in pain management and desperately want to be off pain medication and find a Dr who can diagnose what is happening to cause this burning. Any suggestions would be extremely welcome.

My gynecologist gave me an RX for a yeast infection. It is Boric Acid 600 mg, capsule form. Inserted into vaginal for a total of 2 capsules, (2 nights)woke up at 5;00 a.m. this a.m. My vagina is on fire. Took a cold shower, then tried to use ice chips, made things worse. Is there any thing I can do at home to help me. I am burning in the vagina so bad. I took one Tramadol 50 mg. to try to help for pain. I have a diflucan left over, can I take that?

@germany100 We are not medical professionals on Mayo Clinic Connect so I can't advise you about what to take and not to take. We do provide support and suggestions and can tell you about our experiences. Many people find that very helpful.

I have had terrible vaginal infections that burned too so I know how painful that is.

The first thing to do is to call or contact your gynecologist if you have access to a patient portal. I don't know if you can take Diflucan. That's a question for your gynecologist.

Are you in the U.S.? There is a vaginal cream that one can buy over the counter for yeast infections called Monistat that I used to use for yeast infections. More recently though my doctor has prescribed Diflucan and I've taken it as directed which has cleared up my infections.

I hope you get through to your gynecologist. Please let me know what they suggest that you do.

It’s an awful feeling; I sympathize. My gynecologist swabs my vagina with gentian violet whenever I have burning (usually from antibiotics). I also take a Diflucan three days apart.
My mom (who’s 103) said her gynecologist used to treat her with gentian violet too - it’s an oldie but goodie.

Has lichens sclerosis been ruled out? A gynecologist or dermatologist can take a tissue biopsy to diagnose. At about 68 yo I started to be very comfortable having intercourse. LS has varied symptoms. Fortunately I live outside Boston so and was able to get a quick diagnosis by my gynecologist and treatment with a dermatologist who runs LS Clinic.

@mmoss- Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Things can really change in a minute, can't they? All of my burnings inside have been the result of yeast infections. Have you changed anything that you use to wash your "parts" with?

When you say your vaginal area can you describe this as inside, outside, or both? Have you had a recent UTI?

Hi, I for one I have had a UTI for sometime, after finally getting it cleared, and treating BV as well, now I’m facing the same burning sensation that seems to not want to leave and this has been after several gynecology appointments. What can I do?

Do not know if this is your problem but I get a burning sensation from vaginal dryness. I have to use estrogen insert (low dosage) three times a week. Check with your doctor because it is prescription.

My vaginal burning was very tight muscles. A genital physical therapist helped me so much and suggested I use a Berman tool to relax the vaginal muscles. More gynecologists are aware of this condition now.

@cherokeefaith What is a Berman tool? With the tool and PT are you doing better now?

I appreciate the reply. This started out as lower abdominal burning for 1.5 months. The paIn then moved Out of abdomen into the vagina. I am 67 years old and have had no medical problems. Medication included Cymbalta for 6 weeks but am now off as I did not feel well while on that medication. I am on Gabapentin but not as much as I was as again I did not feel like myself. Since being in pain management I have been on Vicodin until a week ago when I started to itch. I am taking tramadol now and Zyrtec and try to take as little as possible and only when pain is really bad. I want desperately to get off the pain medication. Last Thursday I had a epidural steroid injection by pain management at the T-12 and L-1 area. It did not stop the burning. I need to find out what is causing this pain and how to get relief without pain medication. My ob/gyn prescribed estrogen cream to try for the burning. I am living in Sarasota and feel as though no one here has been able to diagnose my pain. I am losing weight, frustrated and depressed. This pain has consumed my husband’s and my life. We feel we have no where to turn for help.

I am so sorry to hear this. I had pretty extreme vaginal burning once, for a couple days. I had upped my progesterone from 100mg to 200mg, and after a couple days of burning, I went back down to 100mg and the burning went away almost overnight. This may be anecdotal or coincidental. But if you're on any sort of hormone replacement therapy, you could look at what you're taking, maybe with the help of a urologist or ob-gyn who specializes in women's sexual health. Hormones are really powerful.

It sounds like Vulvodinia! I had terrible burning too in 2008 and I was sent to a neurologist who discovered the problem.I used Gabapentin and amytriptyline for years and high doses,I now only take 1 gabapentin and 1 amytriptyline once a day and I haven’t had any pain for years. It took quiet a while to discover the problem.I remember that I could only wear baggy pants, skirts, and dresses.Good Luck!
