Vaginal atrophy and painful intercourse: What helps?

Posted by Anonymous297113 @anonymous297113, Sep 27, 2022

Seems like vaginal atrophy is a taboo topic, yet so many women are suffering with this. It’s a subject so difficult to discuss with your husband, partner, doctors, etc. Many women have told me estrogen creams don’t work, Mona Lisa type treatments don’t help, and our sex lives are non-existent.

Honestly I feel almost worthless when it comes to being intimate. It’s really sad and I wish I could have normal sex again without feeling like I’m being stabbed by a knife, hiding my face crying, and swollen.

Have you found anything that helps?

It concerns me that two cancers showed up after using a vaginal estrogen cream. Did I read that correctly? Thanks

@barbaradh One breast DCIS cancer, but it almost positively didn’t cause it. But may have accelerated it. Cancers take years to grow. In general low grade breast cancer takes 9 years from cell to a size large enough to feel or image. Intermediate grade, what I had, takes 6 years, and high grade 4 years. These numbers are shared on cancer support/org sites, you can find them on any reputable cancer website.

I wasn’t using estradiol cream 6 years prior to diagnosis, but I did use quite a bit of it in the 18 months leading up to diagnosis. That’s why I wonder if it accelerated growth of a lesion that was already there.

Estrogen cream (Estrodial) works wonders. The secret is not to use the amount specified on the package, as that is too much and it burned. My doctor suggested a pea size dollop every other day to start with, and lo and behold, that worked wonders.

Estrogen cream (Estrodiol) worked wonders for me. The secret is not to use the amount specified on the package, as that is too much (at least for me) and caused a burning sensation. My doctor suggested a pea-sized dollop every other day to start with, and lo and behold, that worked. It helped with a number of issues like the extreme dryness, burning, incontinence, and the studies I read said there is no association with breast cancer since such a low amount is absorbed. Now I only use it as needed.

@laurarice26 RepaGyn's Vaginal Moisturizer |Useful in Burning, Itching, Vaginal Lubrication | Natural and Non-hormonal | Effective in Menopause Dryness and Mucosa Healing
You can buy it on Amazon
Customers find the vaginal moisturizer effective, with one mentioning it got rid of a ghost UTI feeling. The product receives mixed feedback about pain levels, with one customer noting it made intercourse more comfortable while another found it harsh on internal organs. Several customers report burning sensations. The hyaluronic acid content also gets mixed reviews, with one customer appreciating its natural composition while another points out it contains ingredients that are not hyaluronic acid.

@fight777. Hi Sue, Here are the products I've learned about. I'll write my little review with them too.

-Hyalo Gyn (only available online from the company). This comes in suppositories or cream. It contains Hyaluronic Acid which is highly recommended by my radiation oncologist. I use it in suppository form as it's less messy and less to go into the landfill. I have a standing order that is shipped so I can get a discount. I use it with a little of Good Clean Love Bio-nourish (available from Target but also from Amazon which also has hyaluronic acid. I put the Good Clean Love product on the suppository and on the entrance to my vagina and then it's easier and more comfortable to insert. I do this 2-3 times a week.

Bio Nourish (a little goes a long way).

Satin by Sliquid. Mayo clinic recommends applying a little every night to the entrance of the vagina. I'm not doing this now as I've been using Hyalo-Gyn as I described because of radiation therapy.

Mayo Clinic sells all of these products in their physical and online store except for Hyalo-Gyn.

You can see I've done a lot of trials and figured what works for me. I know you will do the same.

You wrote that you are finishing chemo and will start radiation How are you feeling?

@edwinabutterfly Thank you for your good wishes. Yes, I am fully recovered from endometrial cancer, and making every effort to enjoy my life in the present. I very much appreciate you and what you wrote to me.

I tried all sorts of stuff but in the end, estradiol a few times a week was the only thing that worked—low dose and apparently stays local so doesn’t get into blood stream
