UTI or urinary retention and inhalers
Anyone experience having re occurring utis due to starting inhalers. I was diagnosed with asthma this year and I’ve tried 3 different inhalers with long breaks in between and each time I get an awful uti or urinary retention symptoms. At this point my utis are becoming antibiotic resistant. On research studies it says it happens with inhalers containing ipratropium and salbutamol. My pharmacist believes it’s because of the steroid in the inhaler but my urologist and allergist haven’t run into this problem before. Does anyone know of names of inhalers that I could use that won’t cause this problem?

Yes, I have been on that for over a year. I also do Manos and cranberry. I haven't had a UTI in 10 months.
Yes I have. I have had a problem for it 6 months or more with severe pain in my pelvic. UTIs and I've never had UTIs. I use Albuterol for now rescue and inhaler a trilogy once a day everyday. And as soon as I use one of them I start hurting more so than I was already hurting. And the trilogy makes it so unbearable thing I can't hardly stand up. I have COPD and post menopausal. Have been to urologist have had CAT scans blood test urine test live culture test done and they still can't figure it out. But I've done research. And I think it is you're steroid in the trilogy. Or too much albuterol. That leaves me in staggering pain mimicking at UTI infection which is not an infection. I am to this day hurting so bad sometimes I can't even stand up. Now they got me going to the gynecologist sppointment.Which my doctor herself is a endocrinologist. And I am tell him they need to look into the severe side effects of trilogy and albuterol. It's all there. Just my opinion. So yes I do believe Albuterol mixed or too much. Causes severe UTIs and yeast infections. Because I've never in my life had either one of them up till this point of 6 months prior. And also was the hospitalized because it hurt me so bad at one point. And they called it a COPD flower but it wasn't and they put a catheter in me on the ambulance. And I think that's where my trouble began also. My PCP has put me on hormonal cream and it doesn't help . The pain or the UTI symptoms.

1 Reaction@tvane27 I understand about the estradiol. Women were told that it caused cancer. I remember growing up with them saying that estrogen caused cancer to grow in women. That is a old way of thinking and has been out dated. We need estrogen for our health as we age into menopause and beyond. These hormones help in the aging process and loose them as we age we need them for normal female aging process. I listen to podcast by women doctors for information. We were raised in a male dominated medical age, we were not truely represented (women) properly. Women are now learning that things we were told and taught is no longer or or was never really true in the first place. I listen to two different podcaster (Mindy Pelz, and Cynthia Thurlow) who are female doctors and are trying to teach us how to live in a way that supports our bodies as we age.

4 Reactions@klancee47 i have those issues as well, many suggestions from Gynocologists. Coconut oil helps tremendously with vaginal pain and dryness. I'm afraid to use estrogen creams.
Thank you for your story.
@anna17 I have urinary retention and now a long long uti. I was on 4 doses of generic Microbid antibiotic for uti and no help. Then Doxycycline, told to stop or I would get C-diff infection from too much antibiotics. I have so many RX allergies, (Penicillin, Sulpha, etc. etc.) so Drs. don't know what to do with me. The urologist put me on Fosfomycin Tromethamine granules you mix with water and drink. It worked for a day or two, then my tongue swole up and throat closing. I took albuterol and lots of Benedryl. Had my epipen ready, but kept drinking coffee & was on the ready to go to ER.
So tired of side effects of inhalers. I can no longer take Simbicort, Bevespi caused HORRIBE reactions, swollen glands and thyroid gland. I had to ice my throat at night in order to take swelling/pain down to sleep.
I began D-Mannose and cranberry pills in hopes it will help. Thank you for your story, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with uti caused by inhalers.

3 ReactionsIf you are taking a steroid inhaler - anything is possible regarding getting a UTI or other infection. Please remember that steroids - no matter what form, cause a decrease in inflammation (which is why it helps in decreasing inflammation of the lungs). However, there are a many side effects - one of which is increased risk of infection. There are numerous non-steroid treatments for asthma - though a steroid inhaler is now one of the first line medications used for asthma maintenance. The person to speak with is your pulmonary provider. There are numerous biologics (injections) which are used. There are new nebulizer medications that are also available. I am not recommending anything specific regarding treatments - as you need to discuss this with your provider. Hope this is helpful.

5 Reactions@naenae2025 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. When you talked about sitting outside celebrating and all of a sudden it came out like a waterfall, this was a urinary tract infection? One related to use of an inhaler for asthma?
