UTI or urinary retention and inhalers

Posted by mchristmas @mchristmas, Dec 5, 2020

Anyone experience having re occurring utis due to starting inhalers. I was diagnosed with asthma this year and I’ve tried 3 different inhalers with long breaks in between and each time I get an awful uti or urinary retention symptoms. At this point my utis are becoming antibiotic resistant. On research studies it says it happens with inhalers containing ipratropium and salbutamol. My pharmacist believes it’s because of the steroid in the inhaler but my urologist and allergist haven’t run into this problem before. Does anyone know of names of inhalers that I could use that won’t cause this problem?

Thank you for your reply! I’m currently not using an inhaler but I’m still struggling with asthma. I’m too scared to use one until I get some information about inhalers that might not cause this issue. I had to go through 4 antibiotics due to the last infection becoming resistant. I feel better now though. No more uti symptoms currently. Thanks for linking me to the other posts!

This very interesting! I am sorry you have to deal with this ...so am I so I know what it is like. I have been on iv antibiotics and hospitalized over the last 2 years for uti's. No one has an answer I also have systitis. AND I take singulair and a daily powder inhaler for asthma. I had no idea there may be a connection! I will look into this. Thank you for sharing your journey, we will keep in touch.

Yes I have. I have had a problem for it 6 months or more with severe pain in my pelvic. UTIs and I've never had UTIs. I use Albuterol for now rescue and inhaler a trilogy once a day everyday. And as soon as I use one of them I start hurting more so than I was already hurting. And the trilogy makes it so unbearable thing I can't hardly stand up. I have COPD and post menopausal. Have been to urologist have had CAT scans blood test urine test live culture test done and they still can't figure it out. But I've done research. And I think it is you're steroid in the trilogy. Or too much albuterol. That leaves me in staggering pain mimicking at UTI infection which is not an infection. I am to this day hurting so bad sometimes I can't even stand up. Now they got me going to the gynecologist sppointment.Which my doctor herself is a endocrinologist. And I am tell him they need to look into the severe side effects of trilogy and albuterol. It's all there. Just my opinion. So yes I do believe Albuterol mixed or too much. Causes severe UTIs and yeast infections. Because I've never in my life had either one of them up till this point of 6 months prior. And also was the hospitalized because it hurt me so bad at one point. And they called it a COPD flower but it wasn't and they put a catheter in me on the ambulance. And I think that's where my trouble began also. My PCP has put me on hormonal cream and it doesn't help . The pain or the UTI symptoms.

HI, If you are a woman and are into menopause it may not be UTI's, years back I thought I was getting a lot of UTI's and my Urologist prescribed Estradiol 0.01 vaginally and that took care of it. If you are into menopause then our skin starts getting thinner and we start having female problem. This is just a suggestion. But it worked for me.

Yes, I have been on that for over a year. I also do Manos and cranberry. I haven't had a UTI in 10 months.
