urodynamic procedure
Who has had experience with the urodynamic study procedure? It has been recommended to me and I want to know more about that.

howarddrlewis, I have had two urodynamic studies. One over 10 years ago to determine whether my retention problem was due to a faulty bladder or due to obstruction by prostate. I had a second ordered by a different urologist as a lead up to having an artificial urinary sphincter installed.
The procedure is painless with only minimal physical discomfort. However, it does involve a great deal of exposure and embarrassment, more even than a cystoscopy if you have had that procedure. Like my cystoscopy, I was naked from the waist down, and they even had me remove my socks which would otherwise have been soaked. I have always chosen male urologists for my local urologist and specialist urologists. However, for both urodynamic procedures the clinicians performing the procedure were female, a nurse in one case and a physician assistant with a nurse assisting, under the supervision of the urologist. While in a standing position, a sophisticated catheter (a sort of coaxial device with a tube within the catheter tube so that not only urine could drain out of the bladder but water could be pumped into the bladder) was inserted into my penis. A rectal probe of some sort was inserted into my rectum, I think to measure the force with which I urinated when it came time to urinate. The bladder was filled until a certain volume was reached until I was given instructions to try to urinate as the clinicians observed.
Good luck with the procedure.
