upcoming lumpectomy
I am having a lumpectomy in 2 weeks for a small 5mm tumor. Has anyone had experience with a lumpectomy with a tumor this size? I am curious what to expect my breast to look like. Has anyone lost sensation in the breast from a lumpectomy?
I would also love any advice to help with the healing process. I plan to take 2 weeks off from work to take good care of myself as I heal.

I had a lumpectomy in 2022 for a small 4 mm tumor. I also had radiation. After treatment the surgical breast was a cup size smaller and unsymmetrical. Since my 36B breasts are not large, the lack of symmetry bothered me so I recently did a fat graft surgery to correct the lumpectomy breast. I was very happy with the outcome. I wish I would have done it sooner.
Depending on the size of your breasts, the lumpectomy may not be that noticeable. I would ask your surgeon about reconstruction if you are not happy with the results. No one mentioned it to me at the time of my lumpectomy and I didn’t know enough to ask.

1 ReactionI had a 7mm tumor but I did reconstruction on both. It was an option that I chose to do. I was a 36D and 60 yrs old. So old lady boobs- now nice looking ones. My silver lining for having breast cancer.
I also had 15 rounds radiation.

1 ReactionI just had a lumpectomy on 02/27/26 and then a revision to get clear margins on 03/11/26. The surgeon injected local anesthetic both times. I had some pain that was managed by Tylenol after the first surgery. The only time I've had pain after the second surgery is when I lifted too much. So follow the restrictions the surgeon gives you. My breast is still somewhat numb. That doesn't bother me because i was having a lot of breast pain before my surgeries. The biggest side effect has been fatigue. My tumor was larger than yours and my breast looks fairly normal to me. I'm between a B and a C cup. I have to be able to lift without restrictions at work so I'm not sure when the surgeon will clear me for return to work. Good luck to you!
I had a lumpectomy in August for a 7mm tumor & there's a small scar but it's fading fast. No numbness. I had to wait 2 weeks to resume Pilates but otherwise, no change in schedule. Very easy in my case.
I have recently been diagnosed with DCIS, 1 cm, and have been told that lumpectomy is the standard of care. Unfortunately, this non-invasive little thing is right up next to my nipple, and two surgeons have said that in order to get clear margins, the lumpectomy turns into a partial mastectomy, with full nipple and areola removal. I'm hesitant to move on it quickly, as it has a lot more ramifications than I had expected for a DCIS lumpectomy. I'm seeing the oncologist next week, and look forward to her thoughts. None of us should be having to deal with any of this!!
