Trazadone use for insomnia for seniors
I am 68 years young and suffering from insomnia since age 53. Multiple life stressors/changes kicked it off. I had hoped once I retired, remarried and relocated to a lovely home it would finally stop but it has not. I can fall asleep fairly quickly, my issue is staying asleep & once I wake up can take up to 3 hours to fall back to sleep. 3 AM I am always awake to about 530...but always after just 3 1/2 hours of sleep I start my awakenings. Tried sleeping aids, ambien the best but suffered from the amnesia side effects...& belsomra same. Now looking at trazadone. I am also on Zoloft for a severe panic d/o, some depression & PTSD. Multiple health issues. Any thoughts on trazadone for a 68 y.o. woman?

Remember, coffee has caffine. So if you drink tooooo much during
the day, esp. the evening, it could be keeping you awake.
I take Trazadone ( 100mg) & some nights it does not work at all.......confusing.
I plan to ask my physician & pharmacist.
The caffeine keeps me awake for around five hours so I have to plan
accordingly.
Hi there, I've been taking Trazodone for the past three years. A relatively low dose of 50 mg has worked well for me, although some nights if I'm especially restless, I take 75 mg. I had the same issue as you before I started taking it. I could fall asleep, but not stay asleep. I sleep much better now. Even when I get up to go to the bathroom or get a drink of water, usually I can go back to sleep. I also take Zoloft (C-PTSD, anxiety ). Currently on 100 mg. No issues with taking 50 mg Trazodone and 100 mg Zoloft.
Having said that, everyone is different. My mother tried Trazodone and was prescribed 100 mg (2x the dose I take). It didn't do anything for her. You won't know until you try it. Hope this helps.

Trazadone didn’t do a thing for me.
I have more problems falling asleep as I occ can get into a wonderfully deep sleep but usually after 4 or 5 am. TG I am retired.
@jefaho just out of curiosity, what are you taking Quetiapine for?
I was started on it for insomnia and resistant depression. I am currently taking 50mg XL which works wonders for the insomnia but not so much for depression. Some people argue that the therapeutic dose for depression is at least 150mg.

1 ReactionI just started on Trazadone, 50 mg. before bed, and so far it is working beautifully. Saw results the first night. I am a little unsteady/dizzy when I first wake up but that quickly goes away, especially after a cup of coffee with caffeine in it.
I had been on Amitryptiline for years, but it was no longer working for me. Trazadone is a similar antidepressant but it is geared more toward sleep.
I am 71 years old.

Oh, I forgot to mention: The Trazadone makes me dream a lot more. The dreams are pretty good, pleasant. If I get up to use the bathroom, I want to get back in bed right away so I can finish the dreams.
I take 100 mg trazadone and slow release melatonin at bed time then one more trazadone around midnight.
Has helped me for last 3-4 years. I get about 7 hours of good sleep each night.
Sorry to hear of your insomnia. It is difficult to make changes and have a repeating outcome.

1 Reaction50 mg makes me restless, doesn't help falling asleep, in fact makes it worse, though I do yawn, have to return to zolpidem after an hour

1 Reaction@judybradford I have been taking Trazadone for 3 years or so. I take my pill, read for 30 minutes, and sleep like a lamb. I do not experience morning grogginess, etc. Glad to hear you are adjusting well to your dose.
