Tops of my feet get hot and unbearably itchy!

Posted by monkus @monkus, Sep 30, 2021

Usually at night the tops of my feet (only) start burning and itching. It's so bad that I feel like I need to scratch to my bones to reach the problem. The only relief is if I wrap my feet in ice packs. Afterwards there are blisters on my skin. Recently, the same thing started happening with my forearms. Has anybody experienced this situation?

Yes, the itching is maddening at night! I got a referral to a dermatologist and got a prescription for Fluocinide which helps a lot. I started out with lesions, itchy patchiness all of which drove me crazy. I treated these areas with the med mentioned and keeping colloidal bandages on the wound itchy areas for days if not weeks. These bandaids are water proof and I believe soap and shampoo irritates those areas of concern so keeping soap off feet is important. I wear rubber gloves once I take out the soaps. It looks weeks if not months to get it under control. I treat any developing itchy patches wherever they show-up ASAP to prevent the patch to grow into a itchy, weeping wound, Again, get a referral to a Dermatologist. It is possible with diligent treatment of itchy patches wherever they start.

Thanks so much for the information. I have made an appointment with my dermatologist and will ask her about the medicine you had success with. I just can't understand why this is on the tops of my feet and why the itch is so intense.

I have the same thing, or very similar. My sensations are tingling & burning more so than itching and it is in the area of the front of my lower ankles and the tops of my feet. I think it is a form of "peripheral neuropathy", or nerve damage. You might try doing an internet search on this term and see if it sounds like your situation and then ask your doc about it. There are treatments if they can determine the cause. I'm just living with mine and sometimes using one of those roll-on pain relievers (like Icy Hot) with Lidocaine added to numb the area. It definitely helps for awhile. Good luck!

Itching on the soles of my feet began in 2020, before Covid was rampant and before a shingles event. The intense itching would start when I would elevate my legs at night after swelling due to being in a wheelchair all day from post-polio syndrome. The itching grew into burning in 2023 and involved the soles, tops of the feet and lower legs. Taking anything like gabapentin was too dangerous for my transfers in and out of the wheelchair...twice I had to call 911 to get me off the floor. So I bought a small freezer to keep next to the recliner I sleep in so I could change out ice packs without having to get up to go to the big fridge freezer. But being warned about skin damage from the bare ice packs, I put the more intense ones into cotton socks and use small towels to buffer between them and my skin so I can sleep well knowing there will be no damage done. I use various-shaped packs (bought from Amazon) and have made some of my own from ice "bricks" used in picnic coolers...again making sure they are well insulated so no damage to worry about. But it can be almost fun finding, adapting, and creating to your own particular needs. I'm also testing on my own as to whether peanut butter and tomato products like catsup and tomato paste affect the burning feet; believe it or not, I think they do! My feet take turns being icy-cold and blue-spotted vs bright red and burning; after a day or two they switch roles completely. Go figure! Also, when my feet are cutting up, I often have intense itching on my scalp and the postherpetic neuralgia left from the 2020 shingles event...all at once, and in the early evening.
