Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm

I have a 5 centimeter Thoractic Aortic Aneurysm
Why does everyone to seem to go for open heart surgery to fix it and not less invasive Tevar ?
Thanks

Tevar has less comparative studies than open repair. It was initially used for those who were poor surgical candidates. Tevar has a higher risk of endo leaking than open repair , but that said - The more done, the better the results. It is also much more country specific and even part of the country specific. Insurance Reimbursement will always be an issue. The techniques involved are excellent. I suspect it will be much like TAVR for aortic valve replacement, which is now more mainstream than open repair. Now, if you qualify for a TAVR it is the better approach to open repair.
Many centers monitor the TAA and wait for the aortic valve to need repair before prompted to open the chest and repair both. Like all surgical procedures, it is an evolving science.

It's odd Cardio nurse said Echo was only 4.3 cm yesterday
So who knows why CT said 5cm
Now Cardio surgeons do some kind of scan I guess to see if its 4.3
Thanks for the info

Do you know who (centers) is doing these Tevar surgeries? It sounds so much better than open surgery.
Thanks!

The nurse practioner yesterday said, "Yes sometimes Veteran surgeons do Tevar
It all comes down to the best approach " , Which makes common sense .
But I'm with you less invasive than open heart surgery , At least what I read about them
Ascending( like I have ) seems like more difficult than decending
But I'm not a surgeon to say that
Next step is new picture , Echo said 4.3 , CT said 5.0, So i'm confused

She called back , she left a message I talked to you in Nov
And it's 5cm
So why did the bother me with Echo its only 4.3 ?

So looks like I'll get this done late next year , They said come in May for new scan

REPLY

Army does not do Tevar , So new cat scan in May 24 , Then they talk to surgeon
they still did not explain why Echo showed 4.3 , I guess its not accurate

REPLY

My surgeon explained why ascending aortic are too difficult to do safely with the Tevar. They only do them for descending.

Mine are always off by a tenth or so. My cardiac surgeon says echo is the more accurate of the two.
