The Hysteroscopy diagnostic D & C

Posted by Goaway @nemo1, Jan 28, 2023

In 8/2022 I had bad cramping then slightly bled for about 2 weeks. I went to ER. Sonogram: bilateral ovarian cysts, fibroids, polyps and a thickened endometrium.

It took two months to see a gyn.

My endometrial biopsy shows simply hyperplasia.

My CA 125 11.8. Negative for cancer.

A bunch of other tests were negative.

I’m to have a hysteroscopy diagnostic d & c in a few days. My doctor told me to be sure no cancer I would need this procedure. If it shows something, I would need a hysterectomy.

I still get pains in lower left side that come and go.

She tried me on medroxyprogesterone. I did not react well to that so it was discontinued…

I have a history of endometriosis dx 2000. I stopped bleeding about 8-9 years ago.

I have other health issues that have been in the forefront. I need to deal with one thing at a time. I am nervous about this diagnostic D & C. I am diabetic and am worried I will bleed longer than I should. I’m essentially waiting for some shoes to drop here.

Has anyone had this procedure that you would not mind sharing experiences and thoughts? How do you feel post op? How long did it take for you to bounce back?

Thank you.

Good morning!
Hi Nemo!
I'm also supposed to consider getting that test, and I have concerns, too.
Please, if anybody is out there with experience, give us some info/guidance?
Thanks, in advance!

I had a d&c with hysterscopy in March for postmenopausal bleeding. It was a quick out patient procedure & I was fine right after. Had a little spotting for about a day. Everything was fine, no abnormalities but I did have endometrial atrophy (very thin lining). Since my surgery in March I did have more spotting however my 3 episodes of spotting were occurring 2 weeks after I was receiving steroid injections in my shoulders. Hope some of this helped.

Hi Anne!

Thank you for your response!

I had the procedure on the 31st. At the hospital while being prepped for OR/procedure the anesthesiologist recommended I have general anesthesia because the table would be tilted and his concerns were that acid reflux would back up and end up causing me to aspirate. I agreed. Well. When I was in the OR the last thing I remember was seeing the room and as soon as my arm was placed on the moveable arm I was OUT. The short of it was I arrived in early afternoon and didn’t leave until out of recovery which was about 4pm. My dr said it would take about two weeks for the biopsy to come in. So its a wait and see. I had no complications and I only bled right after and then a little 1.5 days after and now no more spotting. That takes care of the bleeding. The problem I’ve been having is a reaction to the general anesthesia. I started to have thigh pain, thought it might just be from the positioning on the table but then the pain went all over, legs upper hamstrings and thighs, calves fore arms, shoulders, abdominals, under ribs. I’m miserable. Its been constant pain through 1000mg tylenol, 600 mg advil and cyclobenzeprine 10 mg. (For the spasms I get) NOTHING is helping this generalized pain. I’m pretty much confined to bed because it is almost impossible to get up from a seated position. The love of my life, had to help me partially get changed and make sure I didn’t fall when I moved. Its been nuts. I called the hospital. They couldn’t get in touch with an anesthesiologist at the time of my call, but nurse said to keep taking tylenol and advil (even when they dont seem to help). She said to keep well hydrated. Flush it out. She said that anesthesia can cause muscle pain. To call today a little earlier and speak to anesthesiologist. She said 24-48 hours I should be s feeling better. I’m still hurting pretty bad from this. I hope it leaves me soon. My mom read something about pre-treating before some anesthesia’s to reduce side effects. I was not pre treated with anything. So thats about it. The biopsy is now a wait and see and this pain I hope will flush out in a few hours. I don’t know what else to do with this all over pain. Thanks for writing.

Oh one more thing, when they extubated, my oxygen level was in the 80.s they had me breathing into a spirometer. So I suppose I would have left earlier if this didn’t happen. I have a problem with low oxygen while i sleep (sleep test). I wear a cpap. Anyway my dr dismissed it and said normal people get this. Not very helpful. I’m waiting for her to read my problem on the pain of the general anesthesia.

Thanks Rottie for responding and telling your story. I’m not sure. I had back steroid injections in Dec 2022 and shoulder injection in 10/2022. I had light bleeding 2weeks post left abdominal pain (bad and pulsating). I had no spotting with injections. I hope you are feeling better.

Thank you Anne. ITs after 10 and no call back yet from an anesthesiologist. I also want the name of the anesthesia used so i could put it on medical info to pretreat if using this one (which I prefer another thank you). I am applying salon pas lidocaine too. Thank God I didnt schedule any drs appointments for the rest of the week!

Take care and everyone feel better.

Me again. The dr that called back has never heard of myopathy 3 days post op. He didnt think it was anesthesia. He thinks something else is going on.

Jeez, what time was it when he called back? From the times on your posts, seems like it was pretty late at night. I hope he gave you some idea of what to do next.

Have you spoken with your primary care doctor? Maybe s/he can intercede. And get you some relief!

(There's a commentary on the state of medicine in the US: doctors working crazy hours- not good- and communicating with patients at crazy hours- also not good.)

Thank you Anne. I appreciate what you have said. It took a while for anesthesiologist to get back. He got back to me late afternoon I think yesterday. Then the gyn got back with pathology which she said is normal (yay). I’m curious though about “squamous metaplastic epithelium” …

I told my neurologist. She said i need a special neurologist a neuromuscular doctor. She told me i needed to see one about other symptoms I have, the tingling in my lower back, legs and feet. Now i can add myopathy to the list of what to mention. I have a history of some strange things that happened. I’ve started a list…

Thank God, I’m feeling some relief. I had extra vitamin c, magnesium and potassium. Bananas, peanut butter, oranges. At least I can get up from a seated position now. Still with pain but at least I can get up! Today is day 4.

Yes, Yes and Yes. It takes about 2-3. Months to get in to see a specialist if you have not seen them before. I made an appointment with the neuromuscular dr she recommended a while ago and the earliest she could see me was 3/31. I am on the callback list for cancellations, that maybe i could see her sooner.

Thank you Anne. The gyn and anesthesiologist recommend tylenol, advil and lots of hydration. Thats it. So I’ve been doing that…
