Suddenly have popping in throat when swallowing. Will it go away?

Posted by kmh1122 @kmh1122, Jan 8, 2022

Hi. This morning I woke up with this weird popping sensation in my neck when swallowing, completely out of the blue and it’s concerning me because I recently had a friend diagnosed with thyroid cancer, so my paranoia is a bit higher than usual. I can feel and hear the popping when swallowing only when my head is in certain positions, and if I apply too much pressure to my neck in the area it’s coming from when swallowing it doesn’t happen. I have been sick this week with an upper respiratory infection and have been coughing quite a bit. I though maybe it could be a swollen lymph node moving against my throat when swallowing, however I can’t feel any swelling or lumps at all for that matter. It does not hurt to swallow right now but I worry that it will if it continues. In terms of symptoms from my URI…. Cough, congestion in both my nose and chest, sneezing, sore throat, plugged ears, all the fun stuff. Is the popping related to me being sick? Will it likely go away? Thank you in advance!

Mine is also on my right side! Feels like someone is thumping my throat from the inside when I swallow. My primary brushed it off but I went to urgent care because I got sick on top of it and they told me to see an ent. I got a referral from them. I’m going on Monday. Have you heard any results yet?

Wow that’s a good way to describe it. It does feel like thumping on the inside when I swallow. No my doctor said I first have to have a neck ultrasound on Monday which I think is stupid. She even mentioned a barium swallow test but I didn’t agree. I wonder if I should go to urgent care. Did you go there for this reason or were you also sick? Maybe I should go to urgent care tomorrow to get a referral to see ent doctor. How does that work? Did the ent refer you to an ent that is part of your medical insurance network?
Do you by chance have acid reflux often or Barrett’s Esophagus?

If I turn my head to the left and swallow I feel that thumping on the right side even more.

I went to urgent care because I was sick but also addressed the popping issue. I didn’t know if they were linked or not. She told me if they problem didn’t go away after I got better to go see an ent and I asked if I could call back and get a referral and she said absolutely. I found the ent on my own, made an appt online, and called back and asked if they could send the referral to that place. I actually do get heartburn/acid reflux a good bit. I also have anxiety, I noticed a lot of other people said they have it on this forum as well. I will update tomorrow after my appt! Hoping to have answers!

I hope you get answers too. I will have to find a way to get a referral too. Be real careful with acid reflux especially if it happens in your sleep. My doctor didn’t tell me that acid reflux would turn into Barrett’s Esophagus and she knew I had acid for 3 years. I recently got diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus so it is pre cancerous in my esophagus. It is so upsetting to me. I will have an endoscopy test every 2 years. I have seen a lot of information on YouTub from doctors and others who have it. I’m following their advice about eating dinner early and stay away from trigger foods. One of the doctors on YouTube is an ENT.

So my symptoms have gone away for the most part (still lingering a little bit but nowhere near as bad as they were) but the popping is still there unfortunately. I guess it’s a good thing I see my primary this Friday for other reasons but I have a feeling she won’t understand what I’m talking about when I bring it up

Did you ever get this figured out? I am currently having the same exact symptoms that you described and its exhausting trying to explain it to other people.
