Starting on Cayston today--questions on sterilizing.
Hi all. Yes, this is day one. I've been nebbing sod chlor and even did Toby off and on for around seven years. Did my first Cayston today. Snapped the metal band on the first three attempts. Had to get a dental pic, sterilize it and salvaged all but one. If there are any suggestions that can make the unbanding successful, I'm listening. My other question about sterilizing is this... The company instructions say to only use boiling water for sterilizing purpose but I've read they only want us to use that method because that is only how they tested their product. I watched a video that said you can use a baby bottle sterilizer. I have one and will be checking the temp to make sure it gets as hot as boiling water (212 degrees). I of course want to make sure I'm killing the bacteria but if the daily time-consuming process can be made easier, let's do it. Thank you all.

@fdixon63, Which device are you using for the Cayston? If it is proprietary and you damage it, will they replace it, or will it be out of your pocket?
I personally would stick to their recommended sterilization method, but I'm a dinosaur. I still use a saucepan for all of my sterilization. In both of my households and my 17' camper, nothing is simpler than a pot, distilled water and a timer, and there is no extra stuff cluttering my limited counter or storage space.

1 ReactionTo open a Cayston vial, flip up the blue cap tab, pull it down to a flat horizontal position, and slowly rotate it counterclockwise to peel off the metal seal.

1 Reaction@sueinmn - Hi Sue. I don't plan to go down a different path than what is indicated in the instruction that came with my handset. I'm using the Altera nebulizer handset along with the Pari altera compressor. Do you think I need to boil with distilled water or can I use tap water? Yes, they say use distilled water. Doesn't boiling kill bacteria or is there another reason for using distilled water? This disease really give you an education. Thanks Sue for your sage wisdom.
@irenea8 - I did well on vial 4 & 5. There is a definite technique to the process.
Thanks Irene.

1 Reaction@fdixon63 Tap water contains dissolved minerals which can eventually the mesh in the handset. Distilling water, which may or may not be sterile, removes those particles and preserves the mesh.
We reuse our distilled water in the saucepan a few times, keeping it covered between uses to limit the hassle of hauling gallon bottles.
