@fdixon63 Tap water contains dissolved minerals which can eventually the mesh in the handset. Distilling water, which may or may not be sterile, removes those particles and preserves the mesh.
We reuse our distilled water in the saucepan a few times, keeping it covered between uses to limit the hassle of hauling gallon bottles.

@sueinmn the instructions that came with my altera nebulizer says nothing about boiling. It describes rinsing the parts in warm tap water, soaking in a couple of drops of clear dish washing soap, rinsing and air drying.
