squamous cell in throat

Posted by jimchardy @jimchardy, Sep 30, 2018

I started developing a lesion in my throat about two months ago. It has recently become more aggressive to the point it has opened a hole in the back of my throat and liquids come out my nose when I swallow.

Any advice on this conditions implications would be appreciated..

Thanks, Wayno. Last night I suffered an unfortunate relapse and felt like I was ready to give up! Couldn't breathe right, felt terrible all night. I stayed in bed for nearly 20 hours! Feeling okay this morning, but still have no appetite and am losing lots of weight. Glad I have only two treatments left and will be receiving hydration infusions for at least another week.

I've heard that hydration helps a lot. Two treatments to go. Even though you will still feel poorly, you will be so happy to not have to go in any more!

The hydration helps more some days than others. I had a bad day Saturday and was in bed all day. Sunday and today is starting out better. Two more days of radiation to go then I should start the recovery phase-a couple of weeks of that, I am told, then I should start to get back to normal.

stick with it, and have done that recently - everyone is different but took a couple for me to notice real improvement. Stick with the plan. If you have neck skin damage, stay with teh course of treatment, for pain, stay with that too - you will heal better having less pain.
Not sure if you are on a stomach tube or not but keep the food flowing, and make sure you add water and keep hydrated. Will try to suggest other things that I did if you have other problems other then the listed above emails

I have had very little problem with the snack pain. I am one treatment from my radiation treatment finishing, so I am hopeful my recovery time will be brief. My biggest issue has been hydration

I had a growth removed from my throat, HPV, with some squamous cells in situ. My PET scan showed no cancer in lymph glands. Doctor says I am less than stage one cancer. Is there a way to build my immune system to get rid of the HPV? I don't want radiation or chemo if I can help it.

The removal of a tumour should have removed the HPV virus (?) but I think you should have a good discussion with your doctor about any further treatment. Sounds as if you have been very lucky to have caught the cancer early! Carcinoma in situ?
I wouldn't trust the immune system to deal with any lingering disease because cancer evades the normal defences of the body. Not sure about the HPV issue. Hope your doctor think you have had enough treatment!

I had a similar situation with a growth at the rear left top of tongue about the size of a pencil eraser. No therapy can done because I am on 24/7 oxygen and the mask they make will not fit over. If they had found any other squamish cell lumps or growths or tumours they would have considered radiation. I have my mouth checked by my dentist every 3 months as she was the doctor that found this originally. HPV can be removed because it is viral. I think that HPV is often present with ovarian cancer too.

Hi @anderrandy, I add my welcome to you. Healthy living is always good to help prevent cancer, a cancer recurrence and to boost your strength to cope with cancer treatments should you have cancer. This includes not smoking, good diet, exercise and regular sleep.

I found this article in ScienceDaily that you might be interested in.
- Why some HPV infections go away and others become cancer https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/03/150324153644.htm
It summarizes "The body's ability to clear an infection by the cancer-causing human papilloma virus (HPV) may be largely due to unpredictable division patterns in HPV-infected stem cells, rather than the strength of the person's immune response as previously thought."

I commend you in doing everything you can to live healthy. I too had HPV pre-cancerous cells removed. Further treatment was not required. However, if further treatment were deemed necessary, I would have done it. Is chemo or radiation being considered in your case?

Hi @daddyof4, I'm really glad that you posted your concerns here on Mayo Clinic Connect. I totally get the irrational need to avoid symptoms and at the same time fear the worse. It's time to see your doctor. It might not be cancer, but even if it is, getting medical help is the best thing you can do right now - for yourself and for your family. I assume from the username that you chose that you have 4 kids. I'm sure that they want you to take care of your health. Show them the good example. Does that make sense?
