Spotting Following Cortisone Injection

Posted by toromama @toromama, Feb 19, 2021

Anyone else experienced spotting following a cortisone injection? This is my second experience. Both times it started about 10 days after the injection. Just wondering how long it usually lasts. The first time was a number of years ago and I thought it only lasted a few hours. I'm now on Day 2. I'm 61 years old and went through menopause when I was 52.

The sonographer said she did not see anything alarming. She said she the doctor has to check it and that I would get a call which I have not gotten yet. The sonographer said she was just going to enter her notes and that was it.

Are you serious ? The APRN I saw 10/9 I felt like she just dismissed it that it could have been from the shot. Cortisone is a hormone. She said also that she's never heard of that yet I'm reading it all over the internet.

It’s hysteroscopy with biopsy. They look around with a camera and biopsy sites that don’t look normal. I have high anxiety which triggers my chronic vertigo. It’s better for me to be asleep.

I see. Wonder why my doc wouldn't do that before a d and c

I had a cortisone shot on 9/29 mid week following the appointment I got such a hot flash that I couldn’t cool off. It was really strange Then this past Sat 10/7 I started bleeding. That shot is the only thing different. Went to the gyno today 10/9 she’s actually a Nurse Practitioner and promptly told me that she’s never heard of that, but I’ve been reading it all over the internet. I am 58 and went through menopause around age 49 to 51. I’m still bleeding enough that I’m wearing a panty liner and have to for an ultrasound at the gyno tomorrow. The first time I had menopausal bleeding I had the biopsy of my Uterus done. I’m really trying to think about this logically and rationally but I am scared, I’m freaking out because I don’t want it to be anything serious like cancer. I’m so freightened.

I had my very first cortisone shot on my right knee in Aug/2023. About 10 days later I started spotting for over a week! I’m 60 years old! Definitely caught me off guard. I see that it is happening to so many of us post menopausal women after getting the shot.

I am on day 6 of the bleeding. Had an ultrasound and they didn't see anything alarming other than a little thickening of my uterine lining. Now......I have to have a D&C and this is the last thing I need. I asked my APRN if they could just do another biopsy but she promptly said no because this is my second time post menopausal bleeding. She is the one who never heard of this but it's all over the internet so go figure. It's a friggin hormone and it's the only thing different in the past two weeks. The sonographer HAS heard of this. I feel like I'm never going to stop bleeding. It really felt just like a period with slight cramping and all. I'm 58 soon to be 59 and went through menopause around age 50 maybe 51. I'm so nervous, I have had the shakes for two days.

My ultrasound was mostly normal accept lining was 5mm, which is thicker than the recommended thickness for normal menopause women. Recommend is 3mm I believe. Not sure if the hormones in the shot that is the cause of the mildly elevated thickening.

That was the same result I got from my ultrasound. My lining was too thick for a woman my age (68). They recommended a biopsy based on the ultrasound. The biopsy was normal. The hormones in the shot must have "kick started" my uterus, plumping it up and causing spotting. My Dr. said he could modify future shots to not include hormones.

How long did everyone bleed after biopsy?

I too have recently experienced this side effect. I am 67 and have been on HRT meds. I started spotting/bleeding 9 days after a cortisone injection in my shoulder. After enjoying NOT having a period for the last 20 years, this was quite alarming. I had an ultrasound, a paps test and a biopsy to rule out any problems. This initially lasted 14 days. A couple of days after it seemed to have stopped I had the biopsy, which resulted in another week of bleeding. I am hesitant to ever have a cortisone shot again unless there is some more information on this. No one at the orthopedic clinic had ever heard of this side effect, though there seems to be several studies out there on this. My gyn even seemed a bit skeptical.

I bled for about 8 days, not a lot but enough to worry me. I'm always a nervous wreck. I am so paranoid every time I go to the bathroom. Now I have a consult for the D & C the day after my birthday, some birthday.
