Social Security and transplants

I found out that social security will pay you a year before your transplant and a year after and it’s mandatory for disability benefits, I was never told that and applied awhile ago they strictly go by your medical records not your income, check into it make an appointment at your local office well worth the time, this goes for any transplants

Not understanding this post. After a transplant one can return to work within a few weeks! Why would disability be needed, unless there are complications?

After my liver transplant mine was a minimum of 6 months to a year I was in horrible shape and lost 65 lbs and couldn’t walk for 3 months without a walker, then I went back to work for 6 months and got injured and haven’t worked for over a year

I don’t know who told you that it’s a pretty major surgery I wish mine was only a few weeks, 2 years later I’m still not able to do a lot of things

Sorry to hear. I am 6 months post and although a lot of bumps in the road , I am golfing and doing pretty much everything I want. Its the tacrolimus side effects that are getting me down, but not the kidney.

Its not as easy as you think, at least not in my state. I applied in Indiana, and was denied after 8 months of waiting for an answer. My MELD was 25 when I applied, so I was pretty sick and hadn't been working. I've appealed it, but had to hire an attorney "who doesn't get paid unless I do" for appeal. That was a month ago, and still haven't heard anything. Getting my new liver was easier than getting $$ for disability. I'm mostly seeking it at this point to pay off the credit card debt I've built up trying to survive the year of not working. They will pay up to a year worth of benefits in back pay. Good luck!

I was diagnosed with End Stage Liver Disease in March 2024… I decided not to return to work after much consideration and filed for disability… I was approved and started receiving payments in October of 2024… I was finally put on the transplant waiting list in December of 2024… I am now patiently waiting….
