Sleep disturbance due to steroids in prep for radition

Posted by donnademps @donnademps, 3 days ago

I am presently taking a steroid in prep for radiation treatment for 3 brain lesions. I am only taking it 1 time in the AM with food. I am experiencing one of the common side effects of sleep disturbance. I'm wondering if it's better to take earlier in the AM (6 AM) with food, or to wait until my normal breakfast time around 10 AM? I am waking up between 4:30-5:00 AM and not able to get back to sleep. I'm not someone who can nap during the day, so my fatique is increasing. I often lay in bed for an hour before getting up, in hopes of falling back to sleep, but it doesn't work for me. Just curious if anyone has had any experience with this side effect.

Take the steroid as early in the am as possible. I’m titrating off of Prednisone after 4 months on it and haven’t had a good nights sleep in the entire time! It’s a double edged sword and I’ll be happy when I’m finally off of it.
Good luck!

plus one for what @andycapp said. I have a terrible time getting to sleep on prednisone (even though it makes a huge improvement in my breathing when I need it.) try taking it as early as possible and if you still can't sleep well, let your team know. if it carries on too long, they'll usually offer some type of sleep aid.

@andycapp
Thanks so much Andy. I am taking it at 6 AM right now, getting up and eating yogurt with it.
Good luck with your sleep efforts.

@mamajite
Thanks Mamajite
I have full blown fibromyalgia right now and sleep is essential. I do start triating after just 2 weeks, so will just have to do what I can. The faster I finish this, the faster I can start the clinical trial.
