Should you get a bone test if only on ADT for 6 months
I am 73 and was on Orgovyx for six months and had 38 sessions of radiation treatment for a reoccurrence of prostate cancer. At 7 weeks off of Orgovyx I am at 214 tester one compare to 567 before treatment. Should I be asking for a bone density test, my Dr has not bought the issue up.
Best wishes to all
Timmy

Hi,
At .014 you are down into undetectable category. Hope for many more .01 type readings, you’re doing great.

I have osteoarthritis, so my joints have definitely had some problems with needing replacement. I’ve had both knees and one hip replaced. My other hip started to give me some real problems, I started doing weight exercises on my legs and my hip problem went away. They called me to have my surgery date set and I told him forget about it, more than six months ago. I no longer have pain in that hip. Had the same sort of experience of one of my shoulders, Doing a weight exercise is made a major difference.
Not sure if you’re doing any, but it might be time to start.
I do have a little joint pain from the drugs, but I take 600 mg of gabapentin three times a day and it eliminates that problem.

Fortunately my oncologist ordered a Dexa at the start of my 18 month regime of Orgocyx, which showed mild osteopenia. He has me on Prolia, and I am doing daily impact loading exercises.
@jeffmark do you know if medicare covers yearly Dexa scans for individuals on ADT? My wife is only allowed one every 2 years and she is on a yearly Reclast infusion.

Since you had kidney stones you should be very careful with Ca supplementation.
If I were you I would ask my doctor about that since Ca and D supplementation actually was never proven to help preventing bone loss.
There were no studies conducted comparing man on ADT who took Ca + D and those that did not and what is even more troubling there are some studies that show that Ca supplementation can increase coronary disease risk, kidney stones and even can have "positive" effect on PC progression.
I found about all that yesterday while doing some reading about recommended daily levels of Ca in diet and was shocked : (.

Hope this was of some help and wishing very fast healing of your kidney. It can be extremely painful condition : ((

My husband has monthly labs done (complete metabolic panel) since he started his ADT, had DEXA and also EKG ordered by his MO and RO. His labs are perfect but still labs are done every month. He is now going through RT.

Thank you for finding these articles, my oncologist has me taking both calcium and Vitamin D. I'll be sure to discuss this with him tomorrow during our scheduled appointment. Certainly there needs to be more studies as these findings go against almost everything else I have read and I think most oncologists suggest Ca + D supplements to their patients on ADT.
@carlsbadguy I was told that Medicare may not pay for the DEXA. But once I was scanned and found positive for osteoporosis there was no problem with Medicare paying. If you have osteoporosis you will likely be treated for osteoporosis . I was and am. The only way to tell if treatment is working is by a yearly scan. I will have another in November. I believe the cash price for the scan would have been $600 or so. My take on this after going through it all, is that a DEXA absolutely needs to be done, even if you have to pay for it yourself. Which I fully expected I would have to do, but in the end did not.
