Should I panic?

My husband's aortic aneurysm has recently grown to 5.0, and while his doctor is not concerned, I am. He is 76 years old, does not exercise at all, eats a lot of junk and processed food, and has recently started smoking. His attitude is that if he has to go, he might as well enjoy himself. Additionally, he is dealing with dementia. If I can break through his thick skull, is there still a chance to repair or halt the damage?

Your right, He had quit about 5 years ago then decided to start up again. I dont understand.

@colonel0808 1st off, you are in the right place. But from your question, I assume you know nothing about aneurysms. So, start looking up or googling every word you do not understand. For instance, I would trade you my ascending aorta aneurysm and root aneurysm for your abdominal one any day of the week. That's because I will eventually need open heart surgery to fix them and 2 months to recover. You on the other hand will require a one inch incision in your groin and a tube with a stint will be inserted up to the aneurysm. Out in two days and two weeks later you won't know you had a problem. Maybe an oversimplification, but the success rate for your surgery is better than 98% so, not to worry. But like one other suggested, find a good aorta specialist and you will do just fine and thanks for your service colonel.

I just got through with AAA OF 6.3cm. I went through EVAR surgery in July at age 70. 2 small incisions in the groin area to install the Artificial Graft Stent.
I was in & out of the hospital in 28 hours. Since my surgery, I’ve had no pain and began exercising regularly after 30 days. I lost 8 lbs. which I don’t miss 😄. I also had an Ultrasound and CT Scan to verify there is no bleeding or stent movement. Will have another Ultrasound in 6 months then every year.
As far as your husband’s 5.0 cm is concerned, my surgeon says the borderline number is approximately 5.3. Im not sure if you are having it monitored, I would definitely do that. Mine was too high to be monitored so I’m not sure how fast they grow.
At 76, his food, exercise & smoking habits are all working against him.
Please seek a second opinion because once an aneurysm bursts theres little time to get to the hospital.
I will keep you and your husband in my prayers 🙏
