Shocked by aging process

Posted by seniormiz @seniormiz, 3 days ago

My fingernails and toenails stopped growing and just keep breaking off. My hair is falling out. My memory is not as sharp and sometimes I feel a little woozy. I hate this. I want my body and my senses back.

For protective reasons the human system is wired to retain (imprint) "bad" experiences rather than good ones-so we don't grab the hot handle again. "Nice" experiences fade because they have no information about danger to us.
So you have to "dig" for the good memories.
I don't remember the bird singing, but the bee sting?

@shmerdloff Thank you. I understand the message.

Wow! Sounds like maybe a thyroid issue? I suggest seeing your doctor, that's kind of fast for an aging problem, most of us have it come on slow thru the years. "An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) causes a slowed metabolism, leading to common symptoms like persistent fatigue, unexpected weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, and dry skin. Other signs include hair loss, brittle nails, muscle aches, depression, and memory issues. Symptoms develop slowly, often over years, and are treated with daily medication."

I have felt the same way. I learned about Radical Acceptance and I accept the inevitable changes going on in my body and my mind. However- your nail and hair issues sounds like thyroid- have you had it tested? I try and focus on what I can do rather than what I cant. Hey I just started lifting weights. Im 72. I also decided to buy a wig cause my hair is thinning. Read the book, When I'm an Old Lady, I Shall Wear Purple. Be well.

Focusing on what you can do is key! Just read the new book, The Other Side of Change, Who We Become When Life Makes Other Plans. The process is the same, no matter age and how many events you experience.

@retirement75 I love the title of that book and will get it, and read it. I am currently reading Project Hail Mary and want to finish it before the movie with that hunky Ryan Gosling comes out. See, the fun I can have at 72 :)!

75 and have been to Mayo for a blissful, life lengthening surgery. I could be morose. I am not. Sparing details let me say "this about that".
FORCE YOURSELF TO WALK! If you hurt, walk. If progeny screw up, walk. If you can't figure out a crossword on in paper or from someone, walk. Treadmill, living room, steps it all counts.
Get your monitor on your phone and with it in your pocket, walk.
You will be goaded to finish whatever goal you set.
WALK!

Finally! Someone who agrees with me about walking! After my cervical cord surgery, I asked my spine surgeon his suggestion for physical therapy. He said, WALK and then walk some more. It has been my experience also that if you are in pain, walk some more! Just yesterday I was grocery shopping while my left hip and right knee were acting up. Immediately I was thinking I needed to cut my shopping short and go home. But I dismissed that idea, added walking in a couple more aisles and suddenly, the pains were gone. I went to another store to walk! Walking can also help your brain talk to the rest of your body. Walk.

@shmerdloff Thank you for the sober advice and for the Leonard COHEN lyrics. He’s my favorite lyricist and I’m so thankful to have his music to remember and reminded of his wisdom and humor. Have a good one!

Hi, Cath! Saw your profile.
You may have MORE than "one last" act to go. Maybe the current one is just "one" of many additonal ones yet to come.
All the best!
