Shock or tremors I am not sure

Posted by jayrob624 @jayrob624, May 11, 2023

I was falling a sleep last night and before I fell into a deep sleep I was awakened by what seemed like electric shock through my body and brain. It startled me because I didn't know what it was. It felt so weird and scary, but I kindly fell back to sleep. What could this have been?

HI @jayrob624 -- I just had that happen again last night. It's jarring. Hypnic jerks, also called sleep starts, are sudden involuntary muscle contractions that make your legs and/or body jerk significantly. They tend to happen as you transition from wakefulness to sleep and often make you feel like you're falling. It can be pretty startling. It can feel like a shock through your body as you described. It's very common and normal. Sweet dreams!

Thank you soo much for the information. You described it to a T. Now I won't be so extra when or if it happens again.

Hi @californiazebra> I had this too, but only once. I did not know what was happening.

I get it during the day as well. Neurologist thinks drug reaction. No MRI problems shown. Sleep specialist says, “This is not RLS, it affects the legs. I do not know what this is. Have you seen a psychiatrist?” I also will grunt from the gut so hard it hurts.

This happens to me often, especially when I start to doze off during the day. Except for minor annoyance, no ill results for me.

I participated in the lawsuit against Cymbalta because of the shock like symptoms in my head and hallucinations at night. I had these documented LONG before the class action lawsuit even came up, about 2 years. I kept telling my primary care doctor that it felt like my brain was being electrocuted. At night, it sounded like someone was banging 2 metal pipes together. The minute I opened my eyes, the banging stopped. I'd try to go back to sleep and it would start again and I'd say to myself, there's that banging sound again, so I know I wasn't fully asleep. I happened to see a commercial on TV one day about the lawsuit and it made the statement....If you've experienced shock like symptoms in the brain....I just remember thinking omg that's what I've been trying to explain to my doctor. I called the number they had for the law office. It took about 2 years from start to finish and I got only $3000 but it was better than nothing. If I'd been able to prove the Cymbalta was responsible for a brain aneurysm I had, I'd have made out like a bandit, as they say. They couldn't connect the dots though so I was happy to get any amount. So, sometimes it's the medication that causes it. I can't take Cymbalta and my doctor at the time cited it was a miracle drug, used to treat many ailments. Mine was for my back pain more than anything else.

You can have restless leg syndrome in your arms too. I've had it before. Only once and it's been a very long time ago but I went to ER because it freaked me out and scared me. The doctor asked me if I'd ever heard of restless legs and I said yes, I've had it before. He said this is the same thing only it's in your arms. I got 10 valium to help with sleep. I only lasted a couple nights.

I am happy you got something for your side effects. How horrible. I was prescribed Cymbalta as well but it made me very nauseous to the point of vomiting and it reduced my appetite so I had to stop.

It happens to me as well as I am starting to doze off and I sometimes feel like I am falling but one night in the hospital, I was sleeping and my body just jerked to the point it actually strained my neck which took almost a week before it stopped hurting me. I had to do some neck lengthening exercises to stop the muscles from being so stiff. Very disconcerting for sure. I felt it was from the medication I had been trying yo alleviate my back pain.
