Thirty years ago when I reported night time leg cramps, my ob/gyn recommended trying magnesium citrate. He said I would know if I was taking too much if I developed diarrhea. I mentioned that I had decided to avoid the side effects I got from milk and other dairy products. He recommended calcium citrate. I took 1300 mg calcium citrate and 650 mg magnesium citrate, about a third each at mealtimes, for years. When the cramps returned, I added 50 mg magnesium glycinate (I couldn't find small doses of magnesium citrate). I think there may be an added benefit--I find it easier to fall asleep if I take the glycinate at bedtime.

@irr4et Thanks for the tip. The magnesium I take is still mostly working to prevent those severe cramps. When they happen, I can't really move to reach for or walk to get something that will help. My foot goes into the ballet "en point" position and any attempt to change position or put weight on it only increases the pain. I'm not sure touch would tolerated. The cramp is so strong I have residual pain for a whole day as things return to normal. As a chemist, I wonder how a topically applied gel gets to the problem area. Time to "google."

Cramps are sporadic and nothing truly prevents them. They can come and go and can cause sore muscle the day after. I have some, then none for a year, then again, then not and so on.

Hello. I've had trouble with cramps off and on, but have found that walking and other exercises have greatly reduced occurrence, if done regularly. But your "en point" reference resonated with me. That happened to me the other morning. I noticed that my skin was saggy, so drank a glass of water with liquid IV. All cramping disappeared within 5 minutes and no muscle soreness resulted. I am still amazed.

I have cramps often from Zometa. I always sleep with an electric blanket on my legs and this helps greatly. For specific, persistent problem areas like toes or the side of an ankle, I will apply an instant hot pack (available on Amazon) in addition to the blanket. While not 100% effective, this manages the cramping well enough where I can get quality, consistent sleep.

@maggieanne76 Thanks for the tip. I have chronic kidney disease and have been cautioned not to drink excess water. The recommended amount for me is 36 oz. a day. I tend to retain water and am on meds to help with swelling. I lost about four pounds in the weeks after I started Jardiance (which was recently given FDA approval for CKD). My doctors are pleased. I don't quite understand the connection between swelling and kidney health.

Hi, I so identically with you. Like leg cramps, or Charlie horses as I called them hurt like heck. My husband has to rub them out because I can't and we use lidocaine pain relief liquid there's also a lidocaine muscle cramp liquid. It's a roll-on and he'll rub it on and try to roll it out and I just lay and scream. I'm so sorry. eat a banana before you go to bed. I don't know what to say as far as you know, I with your permission, I'll say a prayer tonight for you so that you may have rest and calmness and peace found in Jesus, Lord Jesus. Take care.
