Severe anxiety w/taking lot of oxys and discontinuing. Will it stop?

Posted by lilnatg @lilnatg, 3 days ago

Hi i had gallbladder surgery almost two weeks ago and the hospital gave me oxys and didn't tell me how to use them so i ended up taking a lot of oxys and then stopping it abundantly and since then I've been having such bad anxiety shaky,I'm not eating enough, the constant worries, I'm not sleeping much , physical sensations and i went to the doctor and she gave me sertraline and hypertension and I've only been on it for 4 days and ik it takes time to work but has anyone else been through this? Will this ever stop?

I remember having a similar but milder reaction when I was younger after using oxys after having my wisdom teeth removed. It does get better and if I remember correctly at about a week after discontinuance. Did your doctor prescribe another drug besides sertraline? You mentioned the doc gave you sertraline and “hypertension “. When starting on new medications they can have some unwanted side effects at first including anxiety. I had that reaction when trying Wellbutrin so you may want to reach out to your doctor again to let them know if you are still experiencing anxiety but it probably is the oxy discontinuation causing it. If you had not been experiencing anxiety before taking the oxys, then it should resolve quickly. If you are not sleeping, you may want to ask your doctor if there is something you can take to help you sleep while your body adjusts because lack of sleep itself can cause anxiety. Keep reminding yourself that this is temporary and will soon pass.

I'm also taking hydroxyzine which is a quick anxiety med and it's not constant anxiety like i had days were i felt fine and great normal i was able to sit with the sensations but still couldn't sleep I've contacted my doctors office so many times trying to talk to my doctor about me not sleeping they keep telling me to wait it out the meds will work so I'm having to turn to over the counter sleep aids and when i wake up in the morning it makes me feel weird and its not a good quality of sleep this all started right after my surgery and I've talked to the surgeon about it and she didn't care i literally don't know what to do anymore ik this won't last forever but i genuinely don't know what to do in the meantime bc even when i feel normal and great my body still looks for the sensations and i still constantly think about my anxiety and if I'm gonna sleep tn and i can't sleep at night bc everytime i go to sleep it feels like my heart is racing and i get adrenaline but my heartbeat is below 100 so i have no clue and i really need answers

@lilnatg If you were taking oxy's for a month, you may be experiencing some kind of physical withdrawal. It will pass. Hydroxyzine is like super benadryl. Some medications affect some people in reverse. For instance, Hydroyzine makes me hyper whereas it make some people sleepy. Narcotics (Oxy's) also affect some people differently. They make some people hyper and some people sleepy. How long were you taking the oxy's?

It would be 9 days now all of my signs are pointing towards hyperarousal/anxiety which sucks bc that means my body is stuck in this state until i figure out how to rewire my brain

I understand and empathize. I am working on that as well. The parasympathetic nervous system takes over sometimes as it does not know the difference in a real threat or perceived. Breathing and listening to short meditations can help, as does reminding yourself that you are safe at that moment. I have to ground myself sometimes, "my butt is on the chair." Try and spot what you are thinking about also. Is it past or future stuff? Hang in there. I know that the anxiety feels like sh&t.

@lilnatg I think that is a wonderful idea. I have seen a therapist for several years now. If your insurance does not cover it, there are non-profits agencies (not sure where you live) that work on a sliding scale based on income. Therapy is great because it is a third party and not family. A place where you can feel safe talking about what you feel and there will be no judgement. Also, remember that if you see a therapist and it does not feel like a good fit, you can always see another one. Hang in there. Try some of the meditations on YouTube. Hang in there and please keep us posted! Pulling for you to have some peace.

UPDATE:
I went to the doctor yesterday bc i was up for over 24hrs again and i asked her if it was hyperarousal anxiety she doesn't think so so she took a blood panel and I'm getting tested for bipolar disorder she also didn't get me any sleep aids and told me to take my hydroxyzine as a sleep aid and make a bed time routine so i tried that last night and i slept 5 whole hours didn't wake up or anything it was amazing i was listening to a guided meditation and it worked wonders
