Self-Care: Finding Inspiration from Daily Devotional Readings

Posted by georgescraftjr @georgescraftjr, Jan 1 4:09pm

It's the start of a new year. Great time to explore ways to self-care.

For many of us caregivers, it's difficult to get out of the house to attend support groups, meditation classes, etc. That's my situation, so I start my day by reading several daily devotionals.

A friend of mine finds inspiration from a book called “Daily Comfort for Caregivers”, 365 Devotional Readings, 2009 Barbour Publishing.

I have this book and it is helpful. One of the first things I do in the morning is get my coffee and read the next page.. I highly recommend it. It has helped me get out of my own way and see the bigger picture.

Strength & Grace is really good, too. One-page daily readings. What I really appreciate is it’s written by caregivers, for caregivers.

Thank you for this! I am currently reading "Grace for the Unexpected Journey: A 60-Day Devotional for Alzheimer's and Other Dementia Caregivers" by Deborah Barr. It is helping me to see my circumstances from a different perspective.

Speaking of perspective, I recently read a book by Samuel Linton titled "Better Than Reason: Finding God's Unexpected Path to Purpose." It helped me shift my questioning from "why?" to "What purpose can I find in this?"

@callmegram Thank you for your comment regarding “purpose”…the “why?” has been my question too. Perhaps reading the book you referred to will help me as well.

I like the idea of finding purpose in responding positively to the challenge of caregiving for my husband with dementia. I don't question "why" anymore. It is what it is. I didn't cause it, I can't change it, I can't cure it. I choose to accept it and learn positive ways to deal with the challenges while also taking care of myself. Blessings to all who walk this path with their loved ones.

Thank you for mentioning the Strength and Grace devotional. I'm assuming it's the one from Guideposts? I just ordered it. I grew up with my mother and grandmother reading Guideposts, but I never ordered it as an adult. It took me nearly 6 decades... but Grandma would be proud. 🙂

@callmegram

I just finished reading "The Long Goodbye," by Patti Davis , Ronald Reagan's daughter. Regardless of what you think of Reagan as a politician, it is hard to dispute his daughter's memories of him as a decent man who had a deep faith in God and humanity. I found the book uplighting.
