Rib tightness after a stroke

Posted by nanna @nanna, Oct 22, 2019

I had sensory stroke a month ago and am experiencing numbness on left side....I especially bothered by a very tight rib cage that makes it hard to breath. Has anyone else had this experience and were you able to find help.

I had a Thalamic stroke in 2021, and to this day , no medication has helped with the tightness from my right jaw to toes. It feels like the muscles stay contracted 24/7. CBD THCA Indica help the pain to a degree pushing it aside not making you think about it.

I had a Thalamic Stroke 2 weeks ago. Left side is affected. Underarm, ribcage are extremely tight, feels hard to breathe as well. Are there rehab exercises that might help. Also feel like a bowling ball is in the back of my upper thigh. What can be done? Have other issues with my arm and hand. Discouraging to hear these symptoms will continue for years.

@dorraine, I am very sorry to hear about your stroke.

I had an ischemic stroke on Christmas Eve, 2018, at the age of 60. Initially, I was in tremendous pain of all sorts, partly because when I had the stroke, I fell off a porch onto the ground, seriously bruising my right (affected) side.

The initial severe pain faded, thanks to effective physical therapy. But other pain persists to this day. Recovery also continues, which helps keep me motivated.

I would suggest working with a physical therapist. I had to stop therapy because of covid, but you should be able to get a lot of help.

I recently had a stroke. I was released from the hospital & have really tightness and soreness on the side which was affected. When I take a deep breath it is extremely painful. They started me on 40 mg of Lipitor. My Dr. said to stop it for a couple of weeks. I'm hoping it is related to the statin.

Hi, @tucsonbob - I'm sorry to hear about your recent stroke.

Glad to hear you are now out of the hospital. The tightness and soreness on the side affected by the stroke, in addition to the pain with a deep breath, sound very uncomfortable.

I thought some Mayo Clinic information on atorvastatin (Lipitor) might be useful, perhaps especially the listing of side effects in this article:

- Atorvastatin
US Brand Name Atorvaliq, Lipitor
https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/atorvastatin-oral-route/description/drg-20067003
Have you already stopped taking the Atorvastatin (Lipitor), tucsonbob? If so, are you feeling any different?

Thank you for the insight. I contacted my PC & he pulled me off for a couple weeks. In just 3 days some off the soreness to my ribs & neck stiffness is better. I think the problem is with the med. I also started PT & thought I might have overdone it. I have backed off PT as well. Regardless, it is better. Again - thanks for the info.
