Transplant Rejection news

Posted by jackiez @jackiez, Jul 15, 2022

Well I knew the journey would have ups and downs. And after my 15 mos checkup at Mayo this week I found out my heart is good but my lungs are showing some rejection. I will be adjusting meds and going back in a month for another bronchoscopy. Such a bummer as things had been going so well. Needing to hear some success stories if you’ve had a similar setback and comeback. Thanks!

@jackiez, I'm hoping and praying that you find some answers and that this is going to be resolved soon. I have a lot of trust and confidence with the transplant doctors at Mayo, and I know that they are going to be on top of this rejection episode. Thank goodness it was caught early ! This is definitely the benefit of routine monitoring.
I've never had a bronchoscopy. Is that an outpatient procedure?

Yes it is outpatient. And results take a day or so to get back.

Hi @jackiez 😊 Were you able to speak with your coordinator today? Do you feel a little better about things?

Thanks for checking in. Yes I did and it helped a lot. I must have still been a little fuzzy post surgery and missed when they said it is common. And mine is very minor at this point with 1 of 12 lung samples showing rejection. Also it’s pretty unusual that my heart has had 0 rejection score to date. So makes it a bit easier to digest and deal with.

@jackiez 😊 That's awesome news!!! I was pretty confident that was going to be their response, but I just wanted to confirm with you. Now you can relax and enjoy your evening knowing that it is a small minor bump in the road that required a slight adjustment in meds to "nip it in the bud!" Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I wanted to make sure you received good news from your coordinator today! ❤

@jackiez, I'm reading positive comments from you!
What kind of follow-up plan or treatment will you need? Are you taking meds. or are there going to more labs or scans ahead for you?
How are you feeling?

Hi @rosemarya ,
I feel good, tweaked meds, plan to go to Mayo next week for another biopsy. However WBC are now critically low for some reason. So later this week a 3 part shot to hopefully boost it and we’ll see what’s next!
Thanks for checking on me.

Hi @jackiez 😊
I am so happy to hear that you are doing well! Regarding your low WBC, I am sure the increase of immune suppression to handle the rejection is the reason. Has your dosage been increased or did they add a steroid to your normal maintenance meds? What are you taking now?

Well they had to hold the Cellcept because of my WBC and instead increased my prednisone. So now I’m working with insurance and doctors to get neopogen injections asap. Hopefully that helps WBC.

Hi @jackiez
Early in my post transplant treatment, when I was taking the full dose of Cellcept 1000mg bid, it caused extremely low WBC. I had several series of Neupogen shots over months. At one point, I was going to my local cancer center every week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 9am. All the nurses knew me because I was a "regular ". The Neupogen shots were not that helpful. But once my Cellcept was reduced, my WBC returned to the low end of the normal range pretty quickly. Now that your Cellcept is "on hold" I think you will see a nice increase in your WBC at your next blood work. 😊 I was going weekly for labs to monitor the low WBC. When are your next labs?
