Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time
I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

I am SO sorry you are dealing with this! I had my infusion back in early December and had terrible right shin pain (as well as hips, hands, forearms, and neck). I iced my shin throughout the the day which helped counteract the pain but did not solve the issue. It was so bad that I considered an x-ray to rule out a fracture. I know what you are experiencing!!! It took about 10 days to calm down to a place where I could return to light daily activities. Just recently I have been able to fully resume exercise and strengthening.
I filed an official complaint with the FDA and encourage anyone else who is dealing with this to do the same. Not sure if it will help get the word out but I felt like I needed to do something!
Yes, this is good to know because I didn't read anywhere that someone else was having the same thing. Did your Shin and foot swell up plus mine feels tight and red and warm to the touch?
I too filed a complaint with the FDA! I have not experienced the shin pain per say. From the Reclast, I have had a lot of pain in my left foot, which travels to the shin area. I have found the less I use the foot less pain. However, one needs to stay active, so I go to physical therapy and try to set myself up a time daily to do my exercises. I have also tried to pinpoint what actually brings the pain and burning on. Once I’m able to identify what triggers it, I try to trigger it and then let it rest, in hopes that the trigger slowly stops the symptoms. Well, some days are a lot better than others. I moved about 1/2 cord of wood yesterday and today I can hardly stand on my foot or move my shoulders. I know nothing is broke so I just take Tylenol and continue on. It has been 9 months since I had my infusion. You have enough going on, I do hope things improve for you!
I did not have the swelling or redness, just intense pain. Hang in there!!
I’ve not noticed any redness or swelling, just very intense pain and sometimes quick movement is almost unbearable. We have an Australia Shepherd that strives for attention and will slide her nose under my arm and snap it up informing me that she needs attention. That quick snap can and does wake you right out of a dead sleep. The pain does go away after a period and limited movement.
After my first reclast infusion I had to be placed in the hospital for pain management. No redness or swelling ...just horrible pain. The second infusion was was given in a slow 45 minute time frame. I had no problems at all. I am sorry you are having to through this. It will get better ...
I am curious, how long did you experience the pain before it went away? It has been 9 months for me and it is at its worse after doing a days chores; bring in firewood, assist in house cleaning.
Oh gosh. I was sick for a week after my 1st infusion. Severe!! pain in every arthritic joint; couldn’t use my hands, left leg hurt to walk so I shuffled, 102 fever for days. I have another one at the end of April and I schedule off work for the week. I can’t take ibuprofen because of kidney issues and Tylenol did nothing. I would decline the treatment except there’s research that shows zoledronic acid can protect against metastatic bone cancer.
I am sorry you are still dealing with this. My pain went away within a few weeks. However, I cut back on daily chores and errands. I now do simple exercises and walk. Walking has really helped me. I hope you find some comfort in my post
check with you doc about taking a half dose of Reclast over at least 45 min. I had issues with Reclast (pain in wrist and CMC joint) and my doc suggested this. I didn't do this but switched to Actonel once a week. The half life in the body is 30 days so I figure if there was a problem I could stop and get it out of my system faster. Good luck
