Post Sleeve Surgery: How long does the gas last?

Posted by theilman01 @theilman01, Apr 9 4:31pm

Anyone know how long the gas lasts after surgery? I realized there’d be some right after, but reading it can last 6-9 months. If so, is there something to take for it?

Thanks for any advise

I had RNY and not sleeve, but my gas is related to type of food I eat. I became intolerant to many dairy products after surgery.

Have you notice if certain food makes it worse?

If continues to be problem, make sure you reach out to your care team / dietitian for advice.

Very good to know. I think dairy may be my issue. Thank you!!

I have RNY bypass. I can eat very small portions of ice cream ie kiddie size
Anything more than that makes me feel sick

I had sleeve over 10 years ago certain foods still bother me ….i stay away from those foods but I do take gas x it is very helpful….as far as portion I still eat kids portion lol it is how I keep the weight off …and honestly I am satisfied with that portion sometimes even that is to much …. I learned to listen to my body ….when I go to restaurant I usually always share with someone in our party…. You will find what works for you takes time adjusting…. But let me tell you so worth it …. So nice not having to diet and watching what I eat constantly…. I eat whatever I want just not a lot of it …. Which Is fine with me …. Good luck on your new adventure

I had the sleeve done June 7, 2023, so it's been almost a year and I still have a lot of excess gas, but only burps, not flatulence. It is quite annoying but the gastroenterologist I saw pre and post surgery thinks it's normal. I can't say one food is worse than another really, as I burp after drinking water, but I find simple things like high protein granola cereal digests more easily with less gas. Smaller amounts digest easier than my full diet portion. I really wish I had more advice for you. I really dislike this side effect but would still do the surgery in spite of it.

Hi, I just wanted to mention that you might want to check with your bariatric doctor about taking Motrin. It is an non steroidal anti inflammatory and can cause problems in the stomach, usually ulcers, when taken after surgery because we have scar tissue and are more predisposed to it. The Motrin may be adding to your problems. My surgeon was against NSAID use after surgery. The first 6 months they were not allowed at all, and after only in exceptional circumstances and taken with an anti acid like Prevacid. But he preferred not using it. You may already know this but I thought I'd mention it in case it never came up with your surgeon. I asked because I have arthritis that was being treated with the NSAID Celebrex.
