Possible kidney cancer

Posted by mrb2 @mrb2, Nov 22, 2022

Hi there. My husband had a CT and MRI both done that look concerning for neoplasm. We have gotten established with a kidney surgeon who is also a kidney transplant surgeon. I feel pretty confident we are in good hands however, it has been months since the 1st imaging. He is to get a repeat CT done in December then we will follow up on the results with the surgeon. My concern is that a biopsy of said cancer has not happened nor any discussion about when surgery will take place, is this normal practice? I am worried about not moving a little more aggressively with this issue however I don't want to seem like an over powering wife either haha. I'm afraid if it is cancer and we don't be proactive it could spread. Me trying to think logical, maybe they are just trying to see if it had grown before moving forward? Also, wouldn't it seem like a pet scan should be warranted just to rule out malignancies?

@mrb2 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.

It's never easy when we're waiting for results and answers, is it?! It's like we are scared to take the next breath, and believe me, we have all been there. It's normal to be worried, and feeling like things are not moving fast enough.

Not all neoplasms are cancer, as seen here in the definition of neoplasm from the National Cancer Institute: "An abnormal mass of tissue that forms when cells grow and divide more than they should or do not die when they should. Neoplasms may be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer). Benign neoplasms may grow large but do not spread into, or invade, nearby tissues or other parts of the body. Malignant neoplasms can spread into, or invade, nearby tissues. They can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. Also called tumor."

Has your husband been in contact with his medical team, and heard their thoughts, yet? Has he been able to see the reports from the CT and MRI scans done?
