Pleural MAC infection

Posted by kzadmgt @kzadmgt, Jan 29, 2023

Hello, I have been diagnosed of MAC infection for a long time and was big three and arikayce for two years. About a half year ago, I started to have pain on the shoulder accompanied with fever and night sweating. It is suspected that the bacteria has been spreader to the pleura. I wonder what procedure I can do to confirm that. And anybody here has the similar experience? I am eager to learn any advice.

@kzadmgt Some people to seem to have back, shoulder or chest pain related to MAC infections, but this is the first time I have heard this exact question, so I did a little searching, and found it is possible to have pleural involvement, but it is quite rare. Journal articles report that pleural fluid can be extracted and tested for MAC.
You are reporting fever and night sweats - are you also experiencing increased coughing or sputum production?
Have you talked to either your pulmonologist or ID doc? Have they done cultures to see if you need antibiotics again?
I will be interested to hear what you learn.
