Phlegm in my throat and post nasal drip after Covid
Ever since I had covid in January of 2022 I recovered from the virus but I was left with a constant phlegm in the back of my throat and post nasal drip that will not go away. The feeling of having mucus in the back of my throat actually gets worse when I try to get rid of it by coughing. I have been given steroid inhalers, albuterol, allergy medication, but none of these work. The mucus gets worse especially after I eat. I've never felt like this before and it all started after covid. Can anybody relate to what I am going through?

Re: Danny2022, has anyone spoken with their ENT about gustatory rhinitis? What did the doctor say? Mucus, coughing, nose running like made and post nasal drip after eating? Not always, but more often when I eat too much, or too fast, haven't had enough sleep or exercise, or ate sugar the night before. Anti-reflux medication has a worse effect. Drinking vinegar helps clear the mucus. Other high vinegar foods, dill pickles, pickled red cabbage, green pepper cut up in balsamic vinegar with salt and pepper. My ENT doesn't know why people get gustatory rhinitis or what it correlates to. It's not caused by the lungs, either. Post-COVID, yes. Takes 12-18 months to recover from COVID upper respiratory symptoms like this, but then if you get COVID again, you can't tell what is going on. Perfectly fine sinuses on CAT scan, it's a mystery all right.
Yes! I had the same thing for 8 months I lived on dayquil nyquil sudsfed etc nothing helped then suddenly it went away
It’s been 3 yrs since covid. Had turbinate reduction and Rhinaer but still post nasal drip wakes me several times a night w coughing. Get up and rinse w saline but it continues. Tried several nasal sprays. Had 2nd CT scan, being seen by head of otolaryngology at Rutgers Medical ctr next week. Nothing has helped so far. Dr Eloy is my last hope. I will try the vinegar starting today. Only thing that has never been suggested before.
So very sorry. I had short covid in March it left me with this thin clear sticky saliva in my throat and tongue. I can't stand it anymore it's not able to come out or swallow I have to try to huck it up in a tissue. I can't eat or drink right because of this I am suffering. I tried a med but it made me sick and my eye would not close. So now I can't use anything as it will cause high blood pressure. I am afraid of using these nose sprays that I think will not clear my throat. I wanted to try children's Sudafed but my doctor said no it causes high blood pressure and mine is not high but has been high in her office lately and they won't let me use anything that causes that. Any suggestions appreciated it's been 5 months it's literally choking me. Hope you get well too.
Hi sorry you have this too I had perfectly fine sinuses too on scan but now I need to see an ent doctor this is choking me and I can't swallow or spit it out it's too thin and stays in the back of your throat and if I do get some in a tissue it can be ok until I eat or drink something or it will just come back on its own. Covid March 19 2025 left me with this it's been 5 months and no better. Hope we all get better and get over this soon. It's awful. See what the ENT doctor has to say. Hope no surgeries. There has to be something to dry this up permanently with no bad side affects. Any advice appreciated.
That's wonderful it went away. I have had it 5 months after short covid. I can't take anything for it as it gives me high blood pressure. I am suffering it is clear but sticks in the back of the throat. My throat is swollen from
Clearing it so much but I cannot eat or drink I choke unless I do this constantly it just will not go away. I have allergies my sinus scan was fine. Wish I could take the Sudafed that helps I heard from many people the non drowsy one. Hope I get well like you did. 🙏❤️
Good! Vinegar, and repeat when mucus repeats. Eat vinegar-laden foods every day. Dill pickles -- good. Also vitamin C, 3/day and lots of vitamins. Then too, keep warm, especially middle of upper back when sitting and concentrating for long periods of time. One sometimes doesn't realize one is COLD, said my Gyn, and you sit there with your head starting to run, and wonder why. (She was right!) Bundle up in the dead of summer, when sitting: Seems weird, but true. And of course, exercise. Your head starts to run, signal to get up, walk up and down a bunch of times (and eat a pickle!) Helps, anyway.
Update on mine: I posted a couple of months ago about my improvement. It continues! My nasal congestion/drainage/phlegm had persisted since covid in September 2023. The only thing I saw as helpful was plain saline nasal spray. The improvement started shortly thereafter and it could be coincidental. My ENT and GP couldn’t explain it and could only recommend other nasal sprays that dried my membrane and wasn’t very helpful.
Anyway….I will continue to use the saline nasal spray at least twice a day. Now, my congestion is greatly reduced. My voice is returning to normal. I sure hope it continues. Best wishes to all of you, as I know how this problem can affect your life.
I know what you mean. I just try to deal with it.
