PD and Excess saliva

Posted by kjk4024 @kjk4024, 1 day ago

My husband has PD and an issue with excess saliva. It is very thick and stringy and sometimes makes him gag. He has seen a speech therapist for a consult with a couple suggestions. Has anyone else had this issue? PD sucks…so many symptoms/issues that most people don’t realize. One day at a time.

Not to that extreme but drooling. Worse at nite; have to change the pillow case often. And, yes, PD most certainly sucks! I learn one more thing I didn't know every few days. Glad to have this chat room.

Yes, I suffer with this problem too. The formal name is Sialorrhea - caused by one or more causes including decreased swallowing and/or over production of saliva. Glands that produce saliva can also change the consistency of saliva. I've come close to embarrassing myself when talking and a drool of saliva spills out - thankfully unnoticed by others to date - I think. Brushing my teeth and spitting leads to long, stringy, thick saliva strands that I have to manually remove - very unattractive, but I brush my teeth in private. I occasionally drool while sleeping too. Good Grief!! There are meds to help control overproduction, but they dry out your eyes as well as your mouth and I already have moderately severe dry eyes. I try to remember to swallow frequently and avoid any pooling of saliva in my mouth. Parkinson's is just full of surprises - not the kind you want though.

I too have problems with drooling and somewhat heavy or thick saliva. Here’s something I came up with to help me with drooling while sleeping on my side. I put a dry washcloth on top of the pillow case and rest my head on the washcloth a couple inches from the edge of the washcloth. When I end up drooling and it wakes me up I pull the wet edge of the washcloth out away from my face until I’m repositioned on a dry spot of the washcloth.
Voilà! I’m on a new dry spot and fall back to sleep. This only works for me if I’m sleeping on my side. I hope you might try it and see if it might work for you.
