Do you have vivid dreams with your PD?

Posted by Teresa, Volunteer Mentor @hopeful33250, Nov 14, 2016

@chrisj2491 @caryp43 @denie57 @johnjames @trouble4343 @tntredhead @aperob @hdruss @retairforceman @macbeth. Hello all! I just read a post from one our Parkinson's spouses about extra activity at night and it got me to wondering how many others out there have very vivid dreams at night that might disrupt sleep and cause problems. If you have, please feel free to share your experiences. If you have found a good way to deal with it (meds, etc.) we would like to know about that as well.

Hi @tntredhead, I was just wondering if you have connected with our Caregiver's Group here at Mayo Connect? There are some great folks in the group who could certainly relate to your situation. I'll tag the mentor for that group @IndianaScott. He will welcome you into the group.

Rem Sleep Behavior Disorder =RBD

I started having "nightmares" where I acted out my dreams with screaming, hitting, getting up in bed, and even scratching my own face reaching for some imagined attacker. It was years before I understood this was REM Sleep Behavior Disorder - an early sign of neurodegenerative disease. It took over 15 to 20 years ( a long time, but not unusual) to put all the pieces together, but a neurologist specializing in movement disorders Rx'd Clonazepam at bedtime and the acting out of dreams stopped altogether.

Most of the time I have trouble sleeping. Along with that my internal thermostat has gone "wacky" and I wake up "drenched" with sweat.

While nighttime sweating can be due to other health conditions, it can also be one of the non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's. Here is a link to an article from the Davis Phinney Foundation on Non-Motor Symptoms of Parkinson's: https://davisphinneyfoundation.org/blog/what-are-the-non-motor-symptoms-of-parkinsons/.

If you scroll down the article, you will find a discussion titled, "Some Tips to Help With Excessive Sweating." If the night sweating isn't every night, you might try keeping a food/drink journal to see whether spicy foods, caffeine, or alcohol trigger it.

Are the night sweats every night?
