Pain in leg muscles, tendons, and knees after Bilateral PE on Eliquis

Posted by smasneri @smasneri, Jul 6, 2023

One month after massive bilateral PE and taking 5 mg twice daily. Experiencing constant and continual pain in legs, mainly behind both knees, in tendons, and some muscle flare ups. Have had two ultrasounds and a CT scan on both legs since I was diagnosed June 6 and they are negative. My D Diemer is .43 and all vitals strong and regular. Echocardiogram shows no strain on heart. We have ruled most everything else out. No trauma to legs, no cuts, bruises or strains. Is this related to the Eliquis? My local hematologist wants me on it for another 5 months, I won’t be able to make that unless this subsides. Anyone else out there having this issue? Recommendations?

Wonder if you’ve had the antibody blood test done yet. If so, what were the results?
I got the ultrasound test done on both my legs and it looks like everything came back normal. At first. I thought I had a blood clot.
Haven’t heard back yet from the cardiologist so I don’t know if she’s seen the test results yet or not.
I would love to be able to stop the cholesterol med for two or three weeks to see if I can feel a difference in my legs, seems like they’re getting worse, very hard to walk and bend my legs. But first I wanna get some concrete information that the cholesterol med does have side effects and it’s not my imagination before I ask the cardiologist if I could stop taking it. .. A lot of times I don’t think the doctors realize much about side effects. At least most of them don’t.

Amen to your comment about side effects. I've gong through many issues caused by medications without doc being aware of side efffects - along with the problem of drug interactions. I now check all side effects and drug interactions before I start taking any meds.

I stopped taking Eliquis for 5 days (this is the longest time I was ever off Eliquis, Cardiologist okayed it, when I was having Dental surgery. no time limit, just get back on as soon as I finish with the surgery). My knee did get better, meanwhile I also visited my primary. Xray and Ultrasound shows that I have a Baker Cyst. Some kind of fluid deposit in the back of my knee. What causes? No answers! So systemically, ordered to see an Orthopedic and Physical therapist. Still wake up with pain in the calf as if I've been running Marathons.
So far, even my C Clinic Doctor agrees that Moderna Corvid Vaccine activated this. I was a perfect picture of health including a heart exam, in March 2021, just before the Covid Vaccine.
4/17/21 got Moderna Vaccine.
5/7/21, end up in ER for the first time in my life.
5/15/21, 2nd Covid Vaccine, didn't make the connection.
6/17/22 2nd Trip to ER, since then, I suffered Afib continuously.
6/28/24 I had an ablation, it stops, but once in a while, I can feel my heart rushes. I was advised that Ablation is not a cure all. Afib could come back.

Hi @tybehr. Welcome to Connect! Reading through your first post and no this one, you have been dealing with systemic problems for a while. I am so sorry.

I am “systemic problem” one as well. It is interesting you mention calf pain as well. I have had swelling at the back of the knee that seems to creep down into my calf at times. Yours may be something all together different. Definitely calf pain at night should be reported to your doctor.

Are you going to pursue orthopedic and physical therapy?

I had exacted the same swollen and pain in the back of right knee then it creeps down to my calf, someday even my left calf aches. I finished 3-session of physical therapy. He sends me home with some stretch exercise. It seems help some. If it's the side effect from one of my meds. The pain could reoccur. I just keeping on stretching. Next follow up visit with an orthopedic not until September.

@tybehr I hope once you find your grove into a routine, and the longer you stay at it, better to PT will help. Fingers crossed! I hope you report back as to how you’re doing as you progress in your process.

Do you find being active causes pain or helps?

Are you on high doses of statins such as Lipitor? That can also cause severe muscle pain…

Yes, yes, yes!!! Leg/knee pain and muscle weakness. Knee pain so bad I could barely sleep at night. Stopped taking Eliquis, (started baby aspirin instead), pain subsided and is now almost gone. I question if there is also a correlation between osteoporosis and the use of Eliquis as my ankle broke, from freak twist. Have been finding some suggestion to that through some online research.

HI
was taking Eliquis for afib for 3 mos ..I had cardio version and afib stopped I have had severe knee pain while taking Eliquis...I am now off of Eliquis for 1 week and have seen articles on medical sites that it can take weeks or months for joint pain to subside. How long did it take for your joint pain to subside once you stopped taking this drug? Thanks

Hi
I take PRADAXA 110 twice day. Still do.
My Knee & Hip pain I do take care more. Like no steppimg down on it or hanging it off the bed.

I also most nights elevate my legs.

Joint and leg pain are so inhibitatimg.

I see my Orthopaedic Surgeon on Tuesday. My knee was given a bad twist and weight on it followed in 2022. I was told by Orthopaedic then that I only had small tears. Three years later still in pain I returned. The tears were still there. He was able to go in and look under our ACC policy. The old big tear was so bad he had to cut the menuscus.

In a PET scan last year it showed inflammation of the left hamstring so he sent me off for an Xray. It showed oesteo and arthritis.

Sometimes history pops its head caused by meds to give you ongoing pain. I sympathise. He may talk to me about a knee replacement. Yes, to my elbow operation which shows small tears.

Is Eliquis twice a day? Better than once a day. Your side effect is unacceptable but you do need to keep up an anti-co-agulant. Stroke risk and my thyroid camcer caused AF and AF caused the embolic stroke.

I hope that stopping the Eliquis stops the pain. Be positive though. I pray and think positive meanwhile. I believe in the positive power of healing.

OOps

Forgot to say that stretches for my right shoulder were not the right treatment.

Not always 'right'. At operation they found an almost full tear, a 1/2" spur growing, and musle down my arm semi detached. Not a good platform for stretches to help. I'd say careful short walks in very soft footwear and spongy.

Who recommended taking olive oil? I’m on both Eliquis 5 mg morning and night and also Rosuvastatin, 20 mg (creator) and am Experiencing problems in my legs, feeling very stiff heart bended to climb stairs to walk started a month after I started taking these medication’s.. Never had a problem before heart attack now wondering if either or both of these medication’s are causing my pain in legs… Asked doctor if I could stop taking the cholesterol med for a few weeks to see if there’s a difference in my legs, She said not to stop taking it. Try taking it every other night… Not sure how long it would take If I did stop taking it to feel any difference in my legs… I’ve had a liver condition for the past 10 years and am on medication for that so I have to be careful to keep an eye on blood work for my liver and my kidney on these meds. So far blood work has shown liver is good getting very disgusted walking can’t do a lot of what I wanna do anymore.
