Pain after liver resection, only when sleeping

Posted by martin77 @martin77, Dec 2, 2024

Having made a very good recovery from a liver resection and gall bladder removal on 16 August, the only issue I have is that sleeping on my right hand side is becoming increasingly painful in the area of the horizontal incision. As soon as I stand up the pain disappears and I lead a normal active life during the day - walking, cycling, gardening and going to the gym. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Hi: I am new to this group but I had a liver resection for HCC Liver Cancer done at Shands Hospital Univ of Florida March 2022. They too took my gall bladder out. Everything went well. Fast forward to January 2025 and I was getting scans every 6 months. I had a 4.5 CM new spot showed up. It too was HCC Liver Cancer same as before. Shands was now out of network with my healthcare provider UHC so I was referred to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fl. I had another resection on June 2, 2025 at Mayo and again it was all taken out no chemo needed etc. I am at home recovering. The first scar was a straight horizontal cut down the middle breast to belly button. Now I was cut with what Mayo calls a "J" Same down the middle but turns to the right and hooks up at the liver like a "J". I was told they tried the new robot surgery but I had too much scar tissue to do that. This one is definitely more painful and taking longer to feel better. I am walking some and showering on my own. My Dr is Fabulous Her name is Katherine Poruk. I have a follow up on zoom with her on the 30th which will be 28 days post surgery.
My question has anyone here ever had it more than once or twice? If so what was the treatment. I'm a little concerned if it comes back what next? We talked about liver transplant down the road but we are not there yet and she said it would depend.
