Overnight Sleep Study Questions

Posted by tim1028 @tim1028, May 18, 2023

I'm getting an overnight sleep study done at an outpatient Sleep Center this weekend. I want to make sure the study is high quality in order to diagnose or rule out any underlying sleep issues.

Any suggestions for preparing for this? I know the usual advice on the day of the study: no naps, no caffeine/alcohol. Anything from your experience to pass on to make this study successful?

...just wondering, as I did after my test: because we are in a different bed, strange room, wires all over us.. is this a true "picture" or accurate results that end up with our getting medication and a breathing machine? daughter's watch has a setting measures sleep movements etc., would this be useful?

I also slept very well the night of my sleep study, probably because me Dr told me to increase my Trazodone and I was so tired after getting hooked up to everything. Then I wore an actigraphy watch for 3 weeks. Although I slept poorly and tossed and turned every night, the sleep Dr said the watch showed I was sleeping "more than I thought I was". Well, I know when I'm not sleeping when I'm looking at the clock every hour and am still awake! I didn't have restless legs or sleep apnea, so didn't get any benefit from the sleep study.

Has anyone used the Philips C-Pap? I see that they have been recalled.

No. I think Resmed A-10 or A-11 with SD Card used in conjunction with OSCAR free open source program you download to analyze your data to fine tune your machine is the #1 way to go. Also visit http://www.apneaboard.com to learn everything you ever want to learn about sleep apnea treatment and machines. I've used the site many times and view the nights data #and type of apneas, flow limits, etc. Small example of this morning data.

It seems that nowadays--is it just me--that medical related things get messed up more often than not. Following my Sleep Study, I had a follow-up appointment with the Sleep doc, who ordered a CPAP device. The company that provides the devices called me to let me know that the order that came in was for supplies (hose, mask, etc.) but not for CPAP. Had to call the office and put on long hold before talking with anyone. Hopefully this is sorted out so I can give a fair trial to CPAP.

You are so right. I find that is the case all over the place. It’s sad that we have to remind, redo, return because of carelessness.
When you are not feel well, you sure don’t want to be on hold for an hour listening to scratchy music!

SusanEllen66--I usually try to use the message function on my electronic record, but that was not available because some system glitch or user error eliminated my record. My doc had to reconstruct his notes from my visit. After each visit that requires follow-up he cheerily informs me that I don't need to do anything, that they'll call me. The VA does better with my war disability related visits.

SusanEllen, Yes, bring your own pillow and blankets. I should have done that. Make sure you adjust the room temperature to what you're used to. I would also try to arrange your sleep time with the sleep tech so that it matches your normal sleep time as closely as possible. I'm a night owl, so they let me go to sleep later, about 11 pm, which helped. I also brought a book and some music on CD to relax to, which helped me relax until they wired me up for the study. I was actually able to sleep, but not as well, of course, as in my usual sleep environment. I was allowed to take a sleep drug (zolpidem 5 mg) which helped me get to sleep.

It looks like a CPAP may be in my future because while my sleep apnea is mild I have symptoms excessive daytime sleepiness and fatigue.

@tim1028 Hi Tim, I did the sleep study. My diagnosis is idiopathic hypersomnia.
IH is basically a a neurological condition with unknown causes that makes someone over tired. Sleep, no matter how much you get is not restorative.
Treatment appears to be medication.
I go to my neurologist on the 30th for treatment plan.

Thanks for your follow-up post, SusanEllen. One of the frustrations of this wonderful Mayo Connect forum(s) is that many folks don't post follow-ups so we are left wondering how they're doing.

I haven't heard of idiopathic hypersomnia, but I'm happy to read in your post that a treatment medication may help. All the best on that. Let us know after your appointment on the 30th how that goes for you.

Regarding my progress, I got fitted with a CPAP mask yesterday, and was instructed how to set up my machine and wear the mask. Last night went well for a first night. I woke up more than usual because of the newness of wearing a mask, but otherwise got a decent night's sleep, with incidents of apnea less than 5 per hour, which is where they want it.

@tim1028 I am happy to hear you are on the right track! That’s great news.

I’m not very hopeful about meditation for me. The medicines that they give you keep you awake during the day but I’m wondering what happens if it’s too strong and you end up staying awake all night too!
Unfortunately, I have a lot of problems with medication. My body is very sensitive and even Tylenol makes me sleepy, so I have to be really careful with what I take.

Will see, just another adventure! Have a great week
