Oral Lichen Planus and LANAP
Hi Everyone. I was diagnosed with oral lichen planus 7 years ago by an oral surgeon at a university dental clinic. I have moved and recently went to a periodontist because of a flare up. He is suggesting LANAP which is laser assisted new attachment procedure. I have some deep pockets but most are 2mm. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this procedure and can tell me about their experience. I'm finally out of pain after using a variety of steroids prescribed by this dentist and know that dental work can cause a flare up. Has it been researched that dental work can cause OLP flareup? My recent one coincided with a visit, plus blood work showed very high levels of B6, an issue I had before.
@margesil I had a gold crown installed and OLP developed around the tooth over the course of a few years. Finally had it replaced with a glass crown (a material that wasn’t available when I received the gold crown) and the OLP disappeared! Definite cause and effect. My dentist agreed.

3 ReactionsI have 3 gold crowns that are decades old. I have had OLP for about 10 years. Were you tested and if so, what kind of test, if not too much trouble. I also ELP (esophageal LP) and purpura which was wrongly diagnosed as LP (the arm spots don't itch- but i get the OLP ELP and purpura when stressed. Thanks for any update.
@chrisanon I had 6 gold onlays and immediately started having issues. I got them placed in the 1980's and never put two and two together because the gold onlays were described as the best way to protect my teeth. I wasn't diagnosed with OLP until 2015 but am thinking it was the cause of my gum issues through the years. I've had 4 of the 6 removed and will be getting the other two taken out; just trying to find a dentist that will take out the onlay and replace it rather than taking the teeth. My periodontist insists that the gold is not the cause of the OLP.
