Oral lichen Planus: What home remedies or medications help you?

Posted by lovebug61 @lovebug61, Apr 4, 2019

Anyone in the group suffer from Oral Lichen Planus. I am at my wits end with all these erosive sores in my mouth. I've had two biopsies , one in the inside cheek and one under the side of my tongue. The spot under the tongue is extremely sore to touch and has been for over a year. It scares me because the soreness never goes away, sometimes it isn't as sore but nothing helps. Any home remedies for this dreadful condition?

I was trying to reply to someone going through a lot with oral lichen planus. Then I had to sign in and now can't find this person's message. This seems common on the internet, while all the time it just keeps getting more and more over-engineered and complicated.

With oral lichen planus, I generally eat only soft food, like oatmeal instead of dry breakfast cereal, rice, cooked vegetables, etc.

I lived most of my life in northern Labrador, but when living in southern Canada for a time, I came across White Oak Bark in a health store. It is produced by Nature's Sunshine Products, Inc., Spanish Fork, Utah, USA. My guess this cure comes from Native American healers. I was told L-Lysine is also good. It is generally used to reduce the recurrence of Herpes Simplex infection.

Another strategy might be to write down all the things you normally eat for say the last 20 years. Evaluate each one for it irritation of the gums. Then try to avoid the ones that consistently are in your diet when you have oral Lichen planus. I switched using sugar to eating honey. It seems to make a difference. Honey calms the nerves, and it seems nervousness is a factor in oral lichen planus.

Do you dissolve the white oat bark and swish with it, or do you take it orally like a medicine?

You take it orally like a medicine. It comes in capsule, and it says, "Serving size 2 capsules".

I think try just one capsule as there are other things in the capsules. The capsules are made of gelatin. Other ingredients are magnesium stearate (vegetable), silicon dioxide (powdered silica).
I didn't find it was helping me personally , but everyone reacts differently to things.

I have Esophageal Lichen Planus which has gone into my mouth, lesions on my legs and body etc.... My mouth is raw every day and some worse than others. I've lost over 30lbs. in the past 7 months. I was prescribed Dexamethasone oral rinse also. This can only be used for 10 days in a row occasionally. I also have oral lidocaine rinse which is useless. It's a topical anesthetic which lasts about 4 minutes. I feel for you!

Hi sadea0208 and others. I've dealt with OLP for over 25 years with gum tissue sloughing off. The dentist did not know what it was. I finally had to go to a teaching hospital to get the diagnosis. Further down the road I had it on my legs, vagina, hands, arms and back. I was prescribed Dexamethasone oral rinse also but it burned my mouth to much to use even cutting it half and half with water. Finally a dermatologist prescribed Triamcinolone Acetonide dental cream 0.1%. I only used it on my gums. It comes in a tiny tube but it does wonders to calm the tissue. Now I'm undergoing dental surgery and it has caused a flare so I'm using the cream again. It was interesting that I asked my dentist to prescribe it but they said they never heard of it and would not go forward with finding out more. I had to go back to the dermatologist to get a new Rx. Now I also use peroxil (reduced strength--mixed with water) a couple of times a day to help with healing from the surgery. Best of luck. Hope this helps someone.

Mine also flared after the Covid vax but it flared even worse after contracting actual Covid! The disease affects the mucus membranes. You have a terrible case of this and I'm very sorry to hear it. The verdict here is that only corticosteroid keeps OLP in check.

BS. I got sick two weeks after the last booster . I developed systemic inflammation and have been in pain since last august. No doctors will admit that the booster caused inflammation. I am considering sewing the big P COMPANY.

I was prescribed Elidel (pimecrolimus cream) for my mouth and tongue lesions by a dental surgeon. It’s an eczema drug and this is an off-label usage. It cleared the OLP fairly quickly and I still use it for flares. Of the many treatments prescribed over the years, this is the only one that WORKS!

I also have OLP and after reading previous posts, consider myself lucky. The lesions in my mouth show up one or two at a time with no pain to speak of and only last a couple of days. My shins have very small scale marks as well as on my forehead and tender spots on my head. These do itch. My worst trouble is in my groin area. When I get a flair up the itching is intense and fatigue prevents me from doing anything. My appetite disappears and I've lost 27 pounds. My Dermatologist diagnosed me and has helped me as much as he can with creams (mometasone, triamcinolon). Also a gargle liquid that gags me so bad I don't use it. Just wanted to share, but if it helps only one person it will make our day!

@zen9 I had OLP (not too bad) when I got the vax. After that it got much worse, and has continued to get even worse. Think about it-- the covid vax is intended to hype up the immune system. OLP is an immune reaction. I rue the day I ever got that vax. Certainly no boosters. Many people I know refused to get the vax and everyone of them is fine, unlike some who took the vax. For example, one vaxed woman ended up with myesthenia gravis (also an auto-immune disease). Yes, you should sue the drug company.

@jshdma @zen9 I certainly understand your need to find a cause or something to blame for your autoimmune condition. I, too, freaked out when I was diagnosed with lesions on my brain. I wanted to know why and where did they come from and what was the cause. No one knew the answers or what my disease even was.
I’ve been doing research since I got sick and found many studies that link covid and some autoimmune diseases, but none that show any link with the vaccine.

I hope you’ll read it and let me know what you think.! Will you?

@becsbuddy Hello Becky, and thanks for your response and suggestion. Yes I will read the article when I have time. However, it is definitively known that the vax triggered numerous bad reactions, including autoimmune diseases. I know that my OLP, which had been quiescent, got much worse post vax. I also know someone who got myesthenia gravis directly after the vax. There is a government compensation fund for persons with vax damage, although they try hard not to pay anyone. The government pushed the vax and masks for small children even though it was proved early on to be counter-indicated. The vax became political and science went out the window. Obviously this vax had not been tested as they always had been. Fine, create a vax but do not mandate it. It went too far-- many people lost their jobs because they didn't want it. What happened to "my body, my choice"?
