Urostomy after cystectomy: Extension tube for sleeping?

Posted by donpeg @donpeg, Jan 14 5:12pm

My husband has a urostomy. He uses a bard foley bag but it is not long enough to turn at night.
What extension tubing could be used to make it longer? Thanks

For my urostomy night bag, I cut me a 1"x3"x35"length of oak molding. Sanded the end that shows from the out side of the bed. I put a large sturdy hook on the end of it and put it between the mattress and box springs and you can adjust it to go closer to towards your urostomy bag. Let it stick out about 2" from the mattress and box springs. by doing this you don't have to lay it in a trash can. I found a nice clear plastic holder at Target in their office supplies area. Since I have a bad hip and need to move it during the night I have reverted to using my Apple watch and set the alarm for 12:30, 2:30 and 4:30 to empty my bag that way I can move around with no restriction. I did make a board for my motor home also. Jackie

@donpeg, good question. I added your post to the Ostomy support group too. I'm also tagging some fellow urostomates like @msrollo1960 @katey122 @gordy6898p @katydid77 @ggarrepy @jmcmurdo to see if they have some tips to help your husband sleep more comfortably.

Donpeg, how long has he had the urostomy?

October 8 2024. He is an engineer and is trying to design a fix. If the bag fills up and doesn’t drain the seal breaks. Not draining is sometimes caused by the valve. Bd/ Bard should invent a nighttime bag long enough for a patient to sleep comfortably and turn.

Had same issue.went to hardware store bought connector for joining two pieces of hose and two feet of clear hose.splice the hose to the length I wanted. Now I can use either a long hose a night or short strapping to my leg when I am out and about.I cleaned everything with alcohol prior to using.
