New Predictive Blood Test: ctDNA

Posted by colely @colely, Jun 10 8:37am

From http://www.theguardian.com. A new ctDNA blood test identifies returning circulating tumor cells before a scan can find cancer recurrence. The old ctDNA used a technique called whole exome sequencing that typically looks for between 16 and 50 mutations. The new test uses whole genome sequencing and searches for 1,800 mutations making it more sensitive. June 2, 2024. This sounds like a real advancement! I wonder when it will be implemented in our treatment.

Thank you flowergal for posting that study! I believe there was mention of a similar study on Mayoconnect a few months ago. Gives all of us hope who have had early stage ILC and/or IDC that we will have another tool to help us in the not too distant future. Yay! Sending Love and wellness wishes to all on this site❤️

What great news!! I wonder how long it will take to get to us. It looks like the authors are from UK.

The link posted above is just a headline link to the guardian.
Allow me to post this abstract about this liquid biopsy test for you.

This could be great news indeed if it translates into clinical practice.😃

Ask your oncologist to order. I find I have had to be my own advocate after my breast cancer diagnosis. So ask for the blood test.

Thanks for posting the link! I just don't understand why our oncologists don't recommend as early detection is all we have. I agree that we have to be our own advocate and I am thinking about asking for a referral or RX for the Galleri test! Can anyone speak to this?

@semurrey

The American Cancer Society has article about Multi-cancer Early Detection (MECD) and specifically talks about Galleri tests:
https://www.cancer.org/cancer/screening/multi-cancer-early-detection-tests.html

There has been other discussions in different groups about Galleri. If on Connect, you can search for "Galleri" .

Here are few (but not all) discussions on Connect about Galleri:
Osteoporosis & Bone Health:
https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/galleri-blood-test/

Cancer group:
https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/galleri-test/

Prostate Cancer Group:
https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/new-blood-test-detects-50-types-of-cancer-at-an-early-stage/

Not all tests are FDA approved or covered by insurance.

I listened to a presentation from local breast cancer oncologist earlier this year and lot of research is going into predicting who is at more risk of developing cancer so can make recommendations for earlier testing if more at risk.
