Nervous about upcoming trip

Posted by patz @patz, Mar 22 9:20am

I am flying into Msp from Dallas in late April. I will be there for a week. I am seeing a GI and Sleep doctor. Traveling alone. I am not used to travelling since I retire years ago. So the whole trip seems a bit overwhelming. Drive to train station, take train to airport, fly to Msp, shuttle to Mayo, and navigate while I am there. Staying at Homewood Suites. Any words of wisdom?? Thanks!

@roch Ask airlines for wheelchair assistance. I LOVE airport assistance. It makes travel easy. They give you a wheelchair at the entrance and take you through all the lines - check-in and security. If I were not already old I would get a grey wig and pretend to be - just kidding

@vic83 I am 68, but I am totally mobile. Good luck with the wig 😉

Many have used the concierge service at Mayo, Rochester, and found the people there quite helpful. Travel arrangements, hotel lists and more information is available. https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/minnesota/concierge-services

@vic83 FYI "small town is around 5000 people and perhaps one traffic light, everyone knows everyone, skyscrapers three stories high. Rochester is roughly 122,000 people and at least two traffic lights. Not to mention that roughly 60,000 people commute every day into Rochester. It's a big city, well managed, friendly, accommodating. Definitely not a small town.

@hrhwilliam I stand corrected, but I am used to the Twin Cities and our suburbs are easily 80,000 with skyscrapers

Dunno what happened but I posted about being nervous about my visit and it turned into an insurance/political conversation about Medicare and insurance. I am not asking for any more input, but it would be helpful if people could stay on topic.

@patz

Sorry bout that. I must have been thinking about another thread discussing insurance. Rochester streets are confusing until you figure them out. Broadway and Center streets are the 2 main ones, but if you aren't renting a car it's not a big deal.

@bajjerfan I should add to your comment about confusing streets. Minnesota is rare in the world of street numbers in that they use for example north third street, south third street, east third avenue and west third avenue all in the same city. In addition, they may use northwest or southeast streets and numbers. One can literally be on the corner of third and third in two different areas of the city.
This whole numbers system is quite unusual for most visitors as it is not found in many other cities in the world. Apparently they lack the ability to use alphabetical names as cross streets to the numbered avenues.
Try to pay attention to the full numbered street/avenue compass location confusion which is Minnesota city addresses.

Fortunately you don’t need a car in downtown Rochester at the clinic.
Hotel should be helpful. Lots of eateries in subway adjacent to clinic if
you like to walk. There are shuttles from most hotels. You will find a helpful well planned ambiance.

@hrhwilliam

Then there are one way streets that add insult to injury.
