Nasal and Sinus Congestion with Pulmonary Fibrosis

Posted by grrranny @grrranny, Nov 8, 2025

Is there anything that can be done for congestion -- especially while trying to sleep? Hubby is losing sleep over this, in spite of using oxygen concentrator overnight. Uses portable oxygen concentrator the rest of the time during day and evening.

I use a net pot before bed when I'm congested since have a blocked nasal passage makes the 02 candela useless

My ENT prescribed a compound to mix with the saline in my netty pot once or twice a day. Sleeping with 2 pillows helps.

Not to be gross, but how far up your nose do you put the Ayr gel? 'Cause I've just used it a few times under my nose and around my nostrils, and it doesn't do much.

@copdinny You apply it in the nose. I use a Q-tip for this.

Just want to add a word of caution if you are trying products while using oxygen. You can’t use any menthol related products like the Boom stick or anything with Vaseline in it. AYR is safe to use and which helped my nose heal. You can just do a quick internet search to check your products.

Also, just a tip if you are congested and can’t breathe while on oxygen. Instead of the regular cannula, you can get a mask type device that goes over the nose and mouth to use with your oxygen. I haven’t had to use mine yet but have it in case this type of emergency, since I use oxygen 24x7.

@isa8 Where can we get an oxygen mask that fits the specific Inogen oxygen concentrator?

Any medical supply store or if you have insurance, like Medicare, your doctor can order it and your regular medical supply company can deliver it. There’s no special size. It just connects to regular oxygen tubing using a connector. You would have to buy this inaddition to the mask. If you are using oxygen at bedtime, you most likely connect it to tubing that is long enough for your everyday needs already. I have Medicare, so I order through my contracted medical equipment provider. Here is one medical supply nobody I have used for things in the past: https://www.vitalitymedical.com/catalogsearch/result/ Let me know if you have any other questions.
