Nasal and Sinus Congestion with Pulmonary Fibrosis

Posted by grrranny @grrranny, 5 days ago

Is there anything that can be done for congestion -- especially while trying to sleep? Hubby is losing sleep over this, in spite of using oxygen concentrator overnight. Uses portable oxygen concentrator the rest of the time during day and evening.

I’ve recently been trying the mint Boom, Boom nasal sticks for mild to moderate congestion and that has been working for me. Sometimes use in combination with breath right nasal strips.

AYR is a saline nasal jel. I helps with congestion. I put it in both nostrils several times a day. It comes in a small tube over the counter. Amazon or any box store with a pharmacy will have it.

@betty41 is it good for a COPD?

Not to be gross, but how far up your nose do you put the Ayr gel? 'Cause I've just used it a few times under my nose and around my nostrils, and it doesn't do much.

I have been on 02 24/7 for a year this week so I have a bit of experience with trying to keep the sinuses open. Here is what I have tried.
Sicaris is a water-based nasal gel that you apply to the insides of the nostrils with a Q-tip. Apply it carefully. You can insert the Qtip at least the length of the cotton swabby thing (3/4 of an inch?). Not a decongestant but helps with the dryness and discomfort of having those damned prongs in 24/4
Xylitol (Xclear) is a nasal/sinus spray using Xylitol, and (I like this) extract of grapefruit seeds! It works, but it might not be suitable for when you go to bed because the stuff tends to run out of the nostrils and down the back of the throat pretty quickly. If you're sitting around watching the tube or something and are in an upright position, it is OK but not when you are lying down. I use this at least once a day.
Rhinaris Nozoil: It doesn't clear the sinuses so much but it keeps everything well-lubricated. I find that it certainly makes blowing my nose easier (a lot more stuff comes out!). I do a couple of drops in each nostril three or four times per day. It does tend to run back out onto your upper lip and it's pricey. Interestingly, the hematologist who has ben following me for my blood clot said this is the only product he would recommend. He definitely does not recommend any saline-based sprays.
Now, here is one I definitely do NOT recommend: Omnaris (ciclesonide). This is a nasal steroid and while the packaging says it could take weeks to be truly effective, I found that the side effects came on a lot faster than that. When I started using it initially, it caused my nose to be horribly stuffed up in the middle of the night. It was worse than not using anything at all. Because it is a steroid, it can also cause a thrush infection, which it did with me. But the worst part of this product, read down to the bottom of the risks and warnings and it says it could cause a perforated septum. I had not been using it for three weeks before I had a hole right through the septum that I can put a Qtip through. A perforated septum does not heal spontaneously and getting in to see an ENT is like pulling hen's teeth here. Even my hospital-based respirologist said I would be better off asking my GP to refer me to an ENT in the community because the hospital-based docs are so busy.
So there's my shopping list of what I have tried; Omnaris NOT. Sicaris? Meh! and the other two, they both work for me. But everything depends on the extent of the congestion and what your hubby can personally tolerate.
As for me, I find that nothing clears the sinuses as much as going out side for a nice bit of fresh air - which I am unlikely to do once winter sets in and the temperatures drop below freezing and there is a foot of snow on the ground.
Good luck with your search and best wishes.

@copdinny It put a dab on my finger and up it as far as it will go up my nose. Sometimes it makes me sneeze which helps loosen crud.
