My stomach makes me look pregnant.

Posted by Seeking answers @bosnianbeauty, Jan 10, 2012

I have been having problems with my stomach for quite a while now.

My stomach is always round and bloated ,as if i am pregnant.
I have pain most days and have severe cramps and vaginal muscle cramps/contractions during my period. I also bleed a lot.

I eat healthy, take multivitamins and drink water and no sodas or fruit drinks just fruits and veggies. I know most people have flatter stomachs even those who don’t eat as well as me.

I have done research and have come to some conclusions that could fit. I think i might have a uterine fibroid or cyst, something that is making my stomach big.
I also have ugly stretchmarks even though i have never been pregnant and am not pregnant, but at times it looks like it.
If anyone has anything similar or knows anything,i would really appreciate the feedback.

hello, I’m here because I’m having these concerns as well. I’m 43 now. But noticed my belly changing once I hit 40. Is this the whole slowing down metabolism syndrome or something else. Ive been to my ob multiple times. However there not concerned. Just the regular pap, an move on. Ive had ultrasounds before as well. I’m thinking of radically changing my diet. Perhaps this will help. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Welcome @tilmykids,
You mention “radically changing” your diet. Changing lifestyle habits to healthier lifestyle habits is a good thing. But I reacted to the word “radically”. I think most of us have experience with making stark resolutions only to see them fail. If you want a new way of eating to stick, I might suggest looking into the Mayo Clinic diet http://mayocl.in/1VaAfql

As the article explains “The Mayo Clinic Diet is a long-term weight management program created by a team of weight-loss experts at Mayo Clinic. The Mayo Clinic Diet is designed to help you reshape your lifestyle by adopting healthy new habits and breaking unhealthy old ones. The goal is to make simple, pleasurable changes that will result in a healthy weight that you can maintain for the rest of your life.”

Would you consider your current eating habits to be unhealthy?

@tilmykids, I would like to welcome you to Connect. This is a nonjudgmental forum where you can ask your questions, and share your experiences with others. I feel that your ‘after 40’ question is one that a whole bunch of us 40+ gals can relate to.
So, if your ob gyn is not concerned, have you talked with your primary care physician for some guidance about this concern?
I have a walking group. And, well, we all have varying degrees of that 40+, 50+, 60+, bulge. most are accepting of it as who we are, I encourage you to ask PCP if it is a normal body change, or possibly related to your metabolism or something else, as you mentioned.

I also encourage you to check out the link that Colleen has provided. The Mayo Diet promotes a life long healthy approach. I don’t know what you mean about considering radically changing your diet. But perhaps, this more ‘serious’ approach that includes healthy eating as well as exercise might be something to consider.

Well looks like I’m going through the same issue. I’m 40 years old and last year I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids and a simple ovarian cyst. Last time I had my period was on March 12th. I had unprotected sex on March 20th and ending of March I started to feel nauseous and frequent urination. My doctor said it was a startupof an UTI but I’m still having nausea, increase sense of smell, dizziness, headaches, lightheadedness, lower back pain, tender/sore breasts, increase of appetite, growing hard upper & lower belly, I have tingling sensation on my lower belly and I keep craving ice cream, salty food and spicy food.
My period was due on April 5 but I spotted on April 8-10 and it was off and on brown red. I was then due again on April 29 but spotted on May 2-4 off and on brown red. Again my cycle was due on May 23 but spotted on May 26 and 27 off and on brown red. I took a blood test on May 8 and it was negative. I feel pressure at and around my belly button and my waistline has thicken. Am I pregnant?

@esteya76 Thank you for your post and welcome to Mayo Connect. I can understand your concern. Have you been to the doctor recently? At Mayo Connect we cannot provide diagnosis, we can only offer encouragement and support. In that manner, I feel that you need to have another discussion with your doctor. You said that you took a blood test on May 8 and the results were negative. If you are comfortable sharing more information, please let us know if this blood test was to confirm pregnancy or some other type of test.

We wish you well as you seek answers to your questions and concerns. We are here to support you. Teresa

I in no way want to be an alarmist, but a dear friend of mine kept “gaining weight” and looked about 7 mos pregnant. It turned out to be ovarian cancer.

Hello,
I have friends ask me if I am pregnant but I am not. I don’t think. I had a myomectomy to remove a small fibroid and found out I also have internal endometriosis inside my uterus. I have not removed my uterus. My stomach LOOKS PREGNANT! It hurts to touch. I also have a lot of gas! I took Miralax (high does as I needed to get my bowels moving) and FINALLY last night I had diarrhea about 15 times total. I am also on Depo Provera not for use of not getting pregnant (I am new first time trying it and its only been 1 month so far) and I will never take it again as I took it for my thalassemia minor and anemia because my hemoglobin is low but not I bleed 14 days on my period on depo and spot multiple times a day as well on depo. I am sure my hemoglobin has dropped. Concerned. I am seeing a Dr. today at 3pm. What could this be? Thanks!

You might want to be tested for SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth). Symptoms of SIBO include bloating, abdominal distension, abdominal pain or discomfort, diarrhea, fatigue, and weakness. There is a simple test for this which entails drinking a solution and then exhaling into a series of tubes every 20 minutes for three hours. (It can be done at home.) The lab checks for hydrogen and methane in your exhaled breath. You can read more about it by searching sibs on PUBMED, article PMC3099351.
