Muscle Spams and Neuropathy
I was diagnosed last year with small and large fiber neuropathy. Originally, the neurologist said that he thought it was a slow-moving peripheral neuropathy. Since then, it has been suggested that this is an atypical polyneuropathy. And things are advancing at a pretty regular basis.
One symptom that has increased significantly over the last couple of months is muscle spasms. I am having them in my lower leg and foot and there is one spasm in particular that just won't stop. It is beginning to last longer and longer. For those of you that have neuropathy, is this a common symptom?

@julbpat glad all the twitching is gone!!
39 yr mom of 2 teen boys. After covid vaccine I had nerve pain to my right eye and right ear. Progressed causing a “bells-palsy” episode. This episode since the first has occurred maybe 10 times at random. Also, slowly began forgetting things, difficulty with getting my words out, difficulty with focus and memory. Now 4 months ago I was hiking and all of my left leg gave out, like a noodle, no sensation or way to stop it. Numbness and tingling began with deep aching pain. Which has now slowly progressed to the other leg. Also, since May my body had started random muscle twitching all over but mostly in my legs. 4 days ago was attempt to mow and enjoy something I love. Only for both legs to become noodles and I fell to the ground.
All test come back normal so far. All I hear is that is strange. No diagnosis. No possible diagnosis and continue worsening symptoms. Has anyone else had this?

1 ReactionYes! All tests including skin biopsy negative but pain in calves and terrible cramps at night. Lyrica prescribed by PCP anyway doesn’t help only makes me drowsy and harder to get up from bed during cramp attack. Magnesium twice a day helps somewhat. Others here have said R -ALA helps them.
Does anyone have a solution for leg cramps? Up to 3 magnesium but still cramping. Why does it happen and does it continue to get worse?
@boymomkat I have that condition. I also suffer from those very similar symptoms. I came down with this over three years ago. I had the Bell’s palsy symptoms very strange. It was almost like I had a stroke, but it wasn’t a stroke. It went away, but it left me with pins and needles in my face. It comes and goes when I first came down with it I had pins and needles head to toe ended up in the emergency room had all kinds of tests, CAT scans, MRIs, from brain to tailbone went to a neurologist had nerve conduction study, small fiber, neuropathy, biopsies everything came back normal had-extensive bloodwork. My B12 was low around 200. Everything else was normal They didn’t think this was causing my causing my symptoms when I came down with I could only walk about 100 feet I decided the only person that was gonna help me was meI got off the gabapentin pushed myself took me a long time, but I was able to walk 3 miles did it every day then started riding my bicycle then I cleaned up my diet lost 40 pounds quit drinking alcohol.I started playing pickle ball. I played as much as my body could stand. I actually came in first at a tournament with this condition I have. I don’t tell anybody I have it.I still have numbness tingling in my legs, face and other places it’s even in my stomach and by the way, it moves around and comes and goes I ended up with a fib it comes and goes. I have it about four times a year. I think it’s related to that neuropathy what they tell me it’s not related to the neuropathy funny I didn’t have it before I came down with this I’m functioning pretty good now. Sorry this is so much about me, but I just wanted to let you know there is hope. you have to do the best you can and try to figure out what works for you. I wish you luck and healing .I think I got it from the vaccine also .

I have struggled off and on with nighttime leg cramps for years. Recently it has been more on than off. I won't go through the history, but will tell you what I'm doing currently. I have PN in my feet and experience the tingling and burning, plus a sharp pain in my left foot from time to time that lasts just a few seconds. I take amitriptyline 30mg and 900mg R-Alpha Lipoic Acid for the PN and have good success. I do not know if the cramps are a result of the PN, so I don't know if those two items have any positive bearing on them.
So to reduce the chance of leg cramps while I sleep, here is my focus:
1. plenty of water
2. plenty of movement, including stretching; the more the better
3. I don't let my legs get cold. In the A/C, I wear long pants and I bought a large heating pad that will wrap around my legs. Especially before bed.
4. I massage my calves and feet with magnesium oil spray (it's really not an 'oil' so it washes off your hands easily)
5. I wear short socks and leg warmers to bed.
6. I take CoQ10, 100 mg one hour before bed, along with 400mg of magnesium glycinate (this apparently is the best for absorption)
7. I do heel raises several times a day to strengthen my calf muscles so they can pump the blood better.
8. I practice relaxing breathing after I get into bed.
9. Last but certainly not least, I pray for God to use the things I've done during the day, whether they were well done or not.
Is it overkill? Maybe. I'm still working on that. But most nights I do not have any leg cramps. And the ones I do have are minor and I don't have to hop out of bed to make them go away. 🙂
