Mucus in my throat and post-nasal drip after covid

Posted by goodrider2024 @goodrider2024, Jan 26 8:38am

Ever since I had covid in November of 2023 but I was left with a constant phlegm in the back of my throat and post nasal drip that will not go away. The feeling of having mucus in the back of my throat actually gets worse when I try to get rid of it by coughing. I no longer have the covid virus but I have this cough that has been going on since November 2023 till January 2024 this cough just won't stop but I have an appointment for the pulmonary and the ENT to find out what's going on I do have acid reflux so I don't know if that's the cause of me to still have this cough.😞😞 I'm on steroid inhalers (symbicort 160/4.5 and Doxycycline for 5 day I have tryed albuterol, allergy medication and that didn't work... Is there anyone going through this too??

Yes!! I discovered I am now intolerant of grains. Had COVID in Nov and had the same problem. Discovered it was worse some days than others, then realized it was wheat products that made it worse. Then realized it's all grains that increase the post nasal drip and cough. Did not have this problem before COVID.

krnelson807...I've had sinusitis for a few years but post-Covid (two bouts, 12/22 and 4/23), symptoms have been much worse, especially the PND, with a.m. gag-coughing an annoying development. I'll take a cue from you and try eliminating grains for a few weeks. Does that include rice? Quinoa, which isn't a grain? Don't you feel like your own general contractor? With all the online research we do, I think we sometimes know more than our doctors. Thanks, and good luck.

I have had the same problem and I am going for a ct scan and reversibility test. I'm coughing since march 2020 when I caught covid . I was very ill since then I have phlegm and constantly swallowing down to stop the cough! I'm at the end of my teacher with it. It's actually good to hear its not just me! I am worried now it could be copd. But I'm only 56 but I'm so fed up with it!

Have you tried the nicotine patch protocol? That worked wonders.... Also, I "just" went to a pulmonologist and had the breathing tests done....of course, either severe asthma or COPD - I figured this would be the label BUT they put me on Trillagy, and within 3 weeks the drainage in my nose and throat is gone - sinus' no longer dripping. Breathing was really bad too - Poof - Gone! Maybe ask your GP to send you to a pulmonologist? It was worth a shot but I figured after 2.5 yrs of all this struggling I had nothing to lose.

Exactly like that. Since August 2022. Pulmonology ENT, GI, all dead ends so far. I’m headed to allergy/immunology later next month. Just when I think it’s getting better, bam, it’s like it mutates in order to override my treatment. It’s so frustrating. Now I use a combo of H2 blocker, antihistamines, mast cell stabilizer and exercise that seems to clear it out for awhile.

I am in same boat. I went to ENT, GI, Pulmology and going to Allegist next week. Can you please tell me what do you take? How much? How often? TY!

Hi, yes, after seeing Allergy/Immunology, first I found that have allergies I’ve never had before. Some vegetables (that’s weird I’ve always loved veggies, but I find most of them don’t really affect me. The ones that do are walnuts, pecans and soy (the worst). I started on Cromolyn Sodium, a liquid, 10ml, that mixes with water, taken 4x/day on an empty stomach (minimum 2 hrs after eating) 20-30 minutes before meals and at bedtime. Also an H2 blocker, Famotodine 20 or 40mg depending on the meal or cimetidine 200 mg. That worked amazingly well for me, as in the best to date since 8/2022. That was in early May. Then in July I had an EGD, upper endoscopy and they found numerous ulcers in my stomach and one in my esophagus (weird no heartburn but bad chest pain) So that doc said continue the cromolyn and take 50 mg esomeprazole, 1/day. I’ve found I cannot tolerate that after about 5 weeks (kidney eGFR was dropping fast and a respiratory allergic response) so I went back to the H2 blockers. I’ll see GI again this week to discuss further treatment because really, I still have problems. The ball of phlegm is no longer always in my throat but I must still have reflux because I still get excess mucous production in my upper chest and head and sinuses, followed often by hoarseness and a nagging cough, and I find it really doesn’t matter what I eat. Last month I had a sinus lift following my dentists finding of a low sinuses on the left side. It has helped with the thick mucous accumulation. A new ENT also did a CT scan and there are other problems in my sinuses including a deviated septum and something else that a surgery may or may not resolve so that’s a possibility. More than what you asked for? Lol, me too, and I’m so sick of it but it just keeps going on and on. Good luck to you.

@mimioto, Thank You very much! I have Ulcerative Colitis for past 10 yrs. I am on immunosuppressant drug Humira for it and was doing well. In 9/2023, I had COVID. Since then I have seen to 2 different ENT, GI, Pulmonologist and gone to Urgent Care and Primary Care several times. I have CT scan of Sinus, blood work, CT scan of Chest, Breathing Test, Endoscopy with Bravo and Colonoscopy, ENT did not prescribed anything. Pulmonologist initially said it is covid induced Asthma. GI says I have acid issue (LPR) but not too bad. She found H. Pylori and treated for it. I get hoarseness, cough and thick white phlegm that is always back of my throat that I have to keep clearing out. It accumulates and once or twice in a day comes out in a thick yellow form. I am miserable for 3-4 hours until I can cough that out. She says cough/mucus is a different issue than LPR. Going to allergist/immunologist tomorrow. I printed out your details to show her. Currently, I take Enzymes (1 or 2 per day), NAC (1 pill), Claritin (1 pill) and Mucinex (1 pill). I may increase dosage slowly. I will start taking Famotodine as I did not tolerate Omeprazole (lowers acid too much and gets burping and belching). I will update you next steps as it seems like there is some similarities in our condition and symptoms. Thanks Again.

It may also help to know that it appears to be a mast cell activation problem. My bloodwork did not confirm mast cell activation syndrome- MCAS. However, it’s apparent that there mast cell involvement, histamines, 1&2 in stomach and head/sinuses, and cytokines in upper respiratory. In my case leukotrienes in the lungs seem ok, tg. Covid was the trigger, causing my immune system to go into overdrive. I call it a mast cell party going on!
