Mucinex

Posted by healthybon @healthybon, Jun 8, 2023

I have been taking 12 hour Mucinex twice a day. I read on label not to take ongoing……any opinions?

Do you feel better after Augmetin? I sometimes wonder if I might need broad spectrum antibiotic rather than specific. Thank you.

My input also: The first time I took it they could not identify what I had from my sputum samples but I was very sick and had 4 or 5 abcess in my lungs. So my Dr decided based on the look of my sputum that I had a certain class of bacteria that would be treated by Augmentin. He was right thankfully and I did feel way better. Then about 1.5 years later I was not doing well so he had me take it again for 2 weeks. The second time it did not help much at all. That is when I suggested to my pulmo that he test me for Pseudomonas which came up positive. It is not affected by Augmentin. So you might check to see if it covers Burkholderia Cepecia (I have never heard of that).

Thank you so much. I will check with my doctor as he always has Bactrim in his mind for Burkholderia cepecia. I have been having that bug for more than 2 years now, very hard to treat as it is resistant to many antibiotic 🙁 coughing and producing mucus every day.

Hi Cindy,
Congratulations for getting rid of MAC and thank you for your helpful post. I am wondering how do you know which antibiotics to bring for an exacerbation of your bronchiectasis? Sounds like you have an antibiotic for this purpose, if so, what is that? I am preparing for my China trip.

Thanks again.

@ling,
I also take Mucinex cough med every 12 hours now and will continue to do so until the cough is under control.

My PLMN Doc is aware that for the last two months that I'm using this cough med strategy and has not asked me to withdraw..... She is now suggesting I join the Arikyce Program....which I've been approved for but still want to hear more about my Doc's thoughts on the side effects and how we will monitor all when I begin to actually take the med.

@sweethighland Augmentin is a broad spectrum antibiotic also. Not effective for NTM type (MAC/MAI etc) infections. With lab technology improvement it's best practice to have sputum cultured before starting an antibiotic.

Mayo stopped the Mucinex for me. She discussed a couple other med changes, but that was on the instructions. It made sense to me because, unlike many of you, I don’t get sputum out. They tried inducing a sputum, but it was a poor specimen and I had a bronch to get the culture, which turned out negative except for penicillium (a surprise to them).

I recently had a bronch too after a 2 month cough. It only showed penicillium too. Have you gotten better? Did you receive any specific treatment?

I always use raw honey in my herb tea because honey is good for lungs and garlic if needed! Honey, ginger lemon is my morning beverage. I got Covid in September and thanks to my herbal tea with thym & honey I was able to protect my lungs and decrease the cough almost to none.

Yes, I think herbs and the belief in them is helpful and so are expertly-prescribed Chinese herbs.
