Moles

Posted by Barb @amberpep, Dec 13, 2016

I have always had an abundance of little and big moles, and lots of freckles, and now that I'm 71 I get these little round dry patches, about the size of a dime, that itch. Anyhow, since I can't see my back, I did some contortions and saw that on my back are 3 dark moles (typical for me), one of which seems to have that dry patch on it and itches. Of course .... me, with my catastrophic thinking, is sure it's malignant melanoma and I'm going to die within the year. I know how ridiculous that must sound, but that's the way my mind works. I have an appt. with my Internist this week and I want her to look at all these patches and especially that on my back. I just wish I didn't worry about things so much. What in the world are these round dry patches anyway?

Hi all .... I have always had a lot of moles and freckles, just like my Dad. I had several of the round dark moles removed several years ago - they were fine, and I also had some subcutaneous hyperplasia frozen several times. My last total skin exam was 5 years ago and I'm going in again in May. Now something new has cropped up and I have no idea what this is ... exzema? psoriasis? I get round circles on my body - here and there - no color, but very dry-almost flaky but not quite - and at times they itch ..... not often, just now and then. They're not very big .... largest is on my thigh and I'd say about 1/2" around and the rest are considerably smaller. I have no idea what this is and whether it's something I need to have looked at before May or not. I keep a close watch on my skin but I can't see my back and I know I have several of those round black moles that need to go. I just don't know what this round, scale type, sometimes itchy, stuff is. Any help out there?

Hi @amberpep,
Seeing a dermatologist sounds like a next step to get a diagnosis. That way, once you have an accurate diagnosis, you can get the right treatment and begin experiencing some relief. It's good to know that you are taking care of your skin and keeping a close watch.

Hi @amberpep,

I do remember that you had posted a similar message back in October, and as I mentioned, a dermatologist would be able to make an accurate diagnosis, and get you on the right treatment, if needed. I'm glad to know that you are going to see your internist soon; please keep us updated.

In the meantime, I would encourage you to read this article about moles, that was posted on Connect: http://mayocl.in/2gK3B6z

Hope this helps.

Golly, it feels so good that you remembered. Yes, I'm seeing my new Internist tomorrow ... it will be the first time since I moved down here. Other than the mole and dry patches, I'm quite healthy. I take care of things as they come up, but I know I need my annual Gyn. checkup, mammo, and possibly another colonoscopy. I wish I could get settled here ..... it's over a year now and I still feel like I fell in from Mars!
