How do you manage Moderate Aortic Stenosis and live well?

Posted by mell80 @mell80, Jun 30, 2022

Hi,
My name is Mell. I am an 80 year old woman with no previous heart problems. I have recently been diagnosed with Moderate Aortic Stenosis. My doctor has not suggested any treatments. Are there any ideas out there about how to maintain one's lifestyle with this condition? (I am moderately active--garden, walk, do Tai Chi.)

I received a new aortic valve a year and a half ago- at age 79.
I did not have many symptoms when I had moderate stenosis.
I was still playing tennis, but got short of breath and dizzy if I overdid it. I have been on BP meds for years before this was diagnosed.
I think that the change to severe stenosis happened sooner than I expected. I was still walking, but not so fast. I could still hit tennis balls- standing still!

what surgury did they perform on you as was the TAVR and 72 in good health but now since diagnosed with this im scared of my quality of life as 2 years ago it was mild to moderate and just moderate now and confused why cardiologist is not giving me meds to help stabilize this s dont want to go into heart failure as keep checking my heart rate and blood pressure which are in normal range as i do wlk every dy and feel fine after my walk as no shortness of breath as would love to connect with you to find out more as this is controling my life as ll i do is thinks about it.
Thnks so much 🙂

I had the TAVR, they go through artery in groin.
There is no specific medication that helps. My cardiologist told me at the onset of stenosis that it will never get better, only worse.
I don’t want you to worry- you are doing well so far and in good shape.
If you start with getting out of breath- then you let them know and you can have another echo.
Your heart is basically healthy- no coronary artery disease.
If you feel worse, they will plan the procedure. You’ll feel normal afterwards. I was not normal before the operation. Now, I’m fine( at 80) and walk a lot and I’m back to tennis.
You won’t get heart failure- you are not symptomatic and you don’t have heart disease.
Before my surgery I got so short of breath going from bedroom to kitchen and had to rest. You are not there.
The cardiac cath showed normal coronaries!
That’s part of the work up before surgery. They also did a full body CT angiogram.
Funny thing- Mick Jagger had same surgery at the same time. He’s also 80+!
He’s back to performing on stage.
